No, I have somebody claiming a car cannot do over 50mph because of a problem with the EGR valve, and I want to disproove it.
Just think its a normal Focus, not a FRS too.

all the egr valve does is let a bit of the exhaust gasses get recirculated into the intake for emmisions.
be it stuck open or closed theres no way that is causing the car to not go over 50mph!!!
would have to be a blocked cat or something more major that has perhaps put the car into limp home mode. cirtainly should be a few fault codes to tell them to stop being an idiot and get the fault codes read.
any details on the car like engine and millage ???

my 1.8 t reg petrol focus is not fitted with an egr valve from factory and it think its the same for the 2.0 ones
i'd go with the colapsed cat therory if its sluggish at about the same rpm in every gear

Not made myself very clear, sorry chaps.
Basically I have somebody claiming a blocked EGR valve has made it impossible for them to go over 50mph, I'd just like some technical info as to why that is not the case, as I'm 99.9% sure they are bullshitting.

imho there bullshiting
read my first post mate, that should be enough unless anyone with a good knowledge of the egr system can give a better explanation.
there fault is something else. it may even be in limp home mode

Can I ask a big favour? Could you write me in laymans terms what the EGR valve does, how it can go wrong and what happens to the engine performance wise when it is faulty?
Basically so somebody with no knowledge of cars could understand what is going on and why it would not make it impossible to do no more than 50mph, or any random speed infact.

i'll give it a shot
egr, exhaust gass recirculation, is a system designed to reduce vehicle emmisions by redirecting some of the exhaust gasses back through the engine to be burnt for a second time. to do this there is an egr valve which opens to let the exhaust gasses into the engine intake and closes to stop the exhaust gasses getting through to the intake.
egr by its very nature reduces engine performance because the burnt exhaust gasses take up some of the space in the engine that fresh fuel air mix would take and therefore you dont get as big a bang and you get less power. this happens when the valve is open and in most cases the reduction in performance goes un-noticed. when the valve is closed no exhaust gasses can get into the intake meaning the max amount of fuel and air mix can get in and burnt more efficiently producing a bigger bang and more power.
some cars can get a starting problem if the valve gets jammed but once started is fine. never have i heard of the egr system, be it the valve or the whole system, cause a big enough problem to cause the car to not go faster than 50mph!! this problem is something far more serious like a blocked catalytic converter or major sensor malfunction that if not dealt with soon could damage the engine. my advise is to take it to a professional and get the fault investigated.
does that help at all mate???
