ive downloaded the songs i want but they wont go on my mp3.
will they only work on iPods? I was told by mates and their tech support that they work on any mp3.
any ideas?

What format are they? MP3 or AAC?
How are you trying to put them on your MP3 player (what MP3 player is this) - with iTunes? Drag n Drop in Windows, using the supplied software for your particular MP3 player?
Where are you trying to sync the files from? The "hard location" of the actual file or the "library location" in iTunes?

Well there's two problems I see there.
1, I highly doubt your cheapo Goodmans MP3 player will play anything other than MP3, and possibly WMA. So you need to convert the songs from AAC to MP3. You can do this in iTunes. Right click on the song(s) you want to convert and select CREATE MP3 version.
2, you can't drag songs out the library (in iTunes) to put them on an MP3 player (unless it's an iPod/iPhone and you're doing it all within iTunes) You need to drag the "hard" file from it's folder location into your MP3 player. Navigate to the iTunes Music Folder (usually in My Music > iTunes Music > artist folders) and select the MP3's you want (remember to not select the AAC's). Then open the window for your MP3 player, and drag the MP3's into it.

also when i open the itunes folder in my music, it doesnt say artist folders, only album artwork, itunes media and some other itunes database files that do nothing when opened.

No it won't say "artist folders" - Artist Folders I meant in the same way of "your name here"

But, if you go into iTunes again, find the song you want, and right click on it, you can select "Show In Windows Explorer" and it will open a folder where the file is.
