does this help

Each Way: In contests with large fields, even the shorter-priced favourites may have quite high odds. To increase the chances of a punter winning something from this bet, it may be offered each way. Each way bets are actually two bets, one for the win and one for a high placing, and are settled as two bets. The place part is calculated at a fraction of the win odds. This fraction will vary by sport and event, and will always be displayed where each way betting is available. In a football tournament the each way part is usually settled at half odds for 1st and 2nd place only. Consider a Ł10 each way bet on England to win the World Cup at 10/1. If England win, a Ł150 profit would be made; Ł100 for the win at 10/1 and Ł50 for finishing in the top 2 at 5/1. If England lost in the final, the profit would only be Ł40; Ł50 from the place part minus the Ł10 stake lost on the win.

basically, if you bet each way, even if it doesnt win but comes in close to the top you get something.
its classed as two bets, one for the win, one for a top finish.

so if it comes in first, you win both bets, if it comes in 2nd or 3rd you will just get a bit back, worth doing i think!

good explanation

Each-Way Bet Example
You bet Ł50EW on Dipsy Discs in the 4.15 at Lingfield at odds of 25-1
The Each Way terms are 1/5 1,2,3
Bookmakers take the Ł100 stake out of your betting account (Ł50EW is 2 Ł50 bets)

There are 3 different outcomes for this bet Horse Fails to Win or Place
If the horse finishes out of the places (1,2,3) such as 4th or worse then you lose your entire stake
A Place but not a Win
If the horse finishes 2nd or 3rd then it has placed, but hasn't won. There is no difference between 2nd and 3rd - they count the same - they are both "a place".
So remembering that your Ł50EW is TWO bets - Ł50 win and Ł50 place.

A) The first thing is that the Ł50 win bet is a loser.
B) However the Ł50 place bet is a winner which as we mentioned above is calculated based on the odds (25-1) and the place fraction (1/5th), meaning in this case the place odds are 5-1.

So that bet wins Ł50 x 5 = Ł250 + your stake back giving you a total return of Ł300.

Putting it together:
So on your Ł50 EW bet (a bet of Ł100) you ended up getting Ł300 back in total = a profit of Ł200, being the net Ł250 profit on the place bet and Ł50 loss on the win bet.

If your going into a betting shop tomorrow please be patient and remember when you place a bet for 5 pound each way your total stake is 10 pound!!! Don't expect to be paid 10 minutes after the race either!!

A $5 eachway bet (total stake $10) on a 10/1
Place terms 1-2-3-4 1/4 the odds (means if your horse comes 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th you will get a return)

If the horse wins you will get $5 divided by 1 x 11 =$55 (divide by the second number of the fraction times by both numbers added together) + $5 divided by 1 x 2.5 (1/4 of ten) + your $5 stake back $17.50. TOTAL RETURN $72.50

If your horse comes 2-3-4th you will only get the second part =$17.50
