Default Decorators and Tilers, is this a reasonable quote?

I know there are a lot of tradesmen on this site, so I wanted to get your opinions on this.

The mrs and I are getting our bathroom redecorated. We have had a new bath and other bits in, but now its to sort out the tiling and flooring.

Now we are going to get the tiles ourselves and the flooring with underlay. Now, measurements I have taken, and rounded up to the nearest meter its about 13m square of tiles to be done and about 3m square for the floor, this measurement also assumes tiling behind the bath, which we know wont happen, but the extras will be needed as we have some pipe covers.

Now we had a guy come in and quote us £500 for the work.

This is to include, fitting 13m of Tiles with a border (strip tiles), with him supplying everything but the tiles and tiling over the pipe covers.

Cutting and fitting 3m of laminate fake tile flooring and underlay.

Other things to consider, he does not have to remove the existing tiles. The walls the existing tiles are on are on plasterboard walls and we are worried that taking them off will also remove parts of the wall. Is this correct or does anyone else have an opinion on that?

So is his quote of £500 fair? I know most tilers charge £20 per square meter. Now even if the flooring is charged at double, that still comes to £380 and not £500.

But if anyone want a job in Croydon and can beat that offer, PM me.

As per ^ mate. A good mat eof mine does kitchens and bathrooms and I'm pretty sure that's about what he'd quote for the work. Well apart from when he did my kitchen as that cost me a pizza, some coffee and I changed the brakes on his Passat

Make sure you have inspection panels. There's nothing worse than having a leak somewhere and having smash tiles, etc to get to it.

Im a ceramic tiling specialist and i wouldnt tile the bathroom for anything less than £500. £20 a meter isnt even mates rates these days. People were paying £20 a m2 over 10 years ago! All i will say if you want to pay peanuts you will only attract the monkeys.

Myself and my dad just tiled my whole bathroom, all it cost me the price of tiles, simple enough to stick to the wall, easy enough to fuck up too.

When I took the tiles off in my kitchen, it did pull off the plaster and a few chunks of board here and there. To be honest I would rather go through the hassle of that again than sticking tiles on top of tiles, or you are going to have an inch thick of tiles on the walls.

Pricey IMO for a small room. Had my bathroom done last year which is twice as big at least and I didnt pay that much for fitting and he tiled the floor and did a bloody good job as well.

£100 a day for a tiler is £20-25k a year if he's lucky and keeps busy, which is bloody good money IMO.

£100 a day for a tiler excluding materials...jog on IMO unless you're in central london or on a high end build

I just had my bathroom done...

26m2 of wall tiles floor to ceiling, round the bath and some holes and stuff cut plus he did the floor which was 4m2.

I provided everything - tiles, adhesive, growt, edging strips etc....

£275.

I would say your price is for a good quality tradesmen and based on being darn sarf.

BUT I would also want the old plaster board taking off - fuck tiling over tiles.

Do it right, do it once.

i have a lad that works for me and charges £15 a metre for walls and £20 for the floor so 13m2 would work out at £195 labour only, i'd guess about £70 to stick that floor down (labour only), plus probably 20L of good quality adhesive and grout as its tile on tile and that whb and toilet would have to come out... i don't know where in the country you are mate, as theres always a variation in price but £500 isn't really over the top,

So the general consensus for this sort of job is £500 is fair. Which is all I was looking for really. Better to ask and know than get ripped off.

But about the tiling over the tiles... seriously these walls are so thin and hollow. I dont know the correct terminology for construction work, the walls must be only about a cm thick with nothing behind any of them, christ if I bang a door hard enough I can hear plaster falling off the back of em But somehow still get enough sound proofing from the neighbours. Which is strange.

And we are only looking at tiling over the tiles because this came as a recommendation from my other half's cousin who works in the trade. How sensible this advice is, I don't know.

Thanks for the reassurance on the price however. Now its just a case of making sure the works isn't shoddy.

I would, but for the following reasons

i) Dont know what I am doing
ii) Dont have the patience for this sort of thing, I will get bored and never finish it/rush it
iii) I am totally rubbish at most DIY and I am guaranteed to mess it up.
iv) I got a E in CDT The only subject I got less than a C in So pretty much destined to be shit at anything like this

Give me a PS3 and I can strip that down and put it back together again in half an hour. Give me a paint brush and I can paint a room in a couple of hours. Give me anything that requires measuring, cutting and putting it all together, forget it.

Haha. Whack some sticky stuff on the walls. squash the tiles into it! done.
I know what you mean though. It was a bit daunting when I first tried it tiling a mates kitchen walls. Mind you, only broke two tiles and cut one in the wrong shape. So 3 tiles out of about 200 was pretty good going.
Was well pleased wiht it in the end and enjoyed it. So we thought we would do the bathroom as well. The novelty wore off about halfway through LOL so now he has a half tiled bathroom. Which has been that way for a few months now!

Think the novelty wore off when you came to a section you couldnt do by the sounds of things. unfortunately a proffesional tradesman doesnt have months to complete a job and we have to make a living from our skills. would like to see some pics of your efforts that you say its a piece of piss to do. a 200 tile 'splashback' doesnt make you a master over night. Heard it all before 'jack of all trades and master of none'

Whey I was waiting for the "master tradesman" to get up in arms about my comments. Chill out sweetheart, its tiling, not rocket science.

Yeah but I'd rather be a jack when it comes to pushing tiles into adhesive. I'd be a bit dissaponted if that was my ace card!

The same way you assumed that I thought I was an expert at tiling, Which i didnt even mention.
