Looks like you got away with a turbo & swirl flaps mate ive seen a good few of these worth scrap value because the swirl flap fuck's the piston & valve seat if its not missfiring your a lucky lad & with a turbo & swirl flaps done it will last for ever as ollie says tho got to be really carefull there is only one reason a car like this will be in the auction because when they are good they are brilliant its when they start going wrong they can be nasty! im sure once the car is fixed you wont look back if i can help you pm me again!

Right, thats me just fitted the brand new turbo and buttoned everythign up, took it for a spin and i am well happy. Booked in for its MOT tomorrow. I had ordered swirl flaps, well i thought i had but something messed up and i need to wait until tomorrow for them to arrive. Soon as thats done will give everythign a proper clean.

Good stuff
Just ordered a set of swirl flap blanks for the old mans E46 diesel touring - He's been having problems with it making a strange noise from the inlet manifold at idle and failed to tell me untill yesterday - a symptom of this swirl flap "about to fail" I believe

I've told him that but he won't listen - he said the noise has been there a while - typical of him really with his "let it develop before I fix it" attitude to maintenance

Yeah well chuffed had it out and about tonight, all i need to do is the front bushes, think i will buy the polyurethane ones, which make should i get, heard something about powerflex and floflex etc. ..... think powerflex were better aint they?
As for your dad graceland, i wouldnt start it until i had done the blanks, you'll save yourself soo much trouble! Wasnt a real pain of a job to do but def one i would have preferred not to do. I'm doing mine tomorrow, cant wait for the peace of mind.
Eveything works, tested the phone kit, all the windows (electric rear pop outs) heated seats etc etc etc. need to give it a good clean next then i was going to keep it but the missus has just told me to sell it, she wants a focus!!!
What can you do.....

theres a few makes, ive used powerflex loads of times (excellent but pricey) deflex (cheap) but seem to work just as well, even if you sometimes have to fettle them a bit to make them fit right.

I attempted the swil flaps on the old mans 320d touring today too - Whipped the inlet manifold off easily enough to find NO swirl flaps - Turns out his car is the 2001 change over year and has direct injection and NOT common rail - so no swil flaps
Waste of £25 then for him

to be honest mate, I havent checked how much its worth yet now that its been fixed properly, it has all the toys etc and after driving it about today with the bushes fixed, i love it. Going to try and persuade the missus to keep it! but she wants a focus. If the right offer comes along its gone but i would imagine it would need to be in the region of 6k ish, will phone my trader mate tomorrow and ask him.

Nice post Cutch, I'm looking at one tomorrow that has has a replacement engine via BMW probably because of this failure. Can I just ask, did you replace or remove the swirl flaps?
#58
removed them mate, the ones that we have will probably fail again! Just put the blanks in. no difference in power/driving whatso ever. I did have #3 swirl flap missing and after i did the turbo put everything back together and drove around for a couple of days but always had that niggling feeling that the others could fail and fk the new turbo i just put in, finally my blanks arrived yesterday and stuck em in today, gave it a bit of beans today and checked it out properly, drives good!

Yep - Only the common rail BMW engines had them - EXCEPT the M47R as fitted to the MG ZT/Rover 75 - as even though this is common rail it does not have the swirl flaps or a VGT turbocharger
