Default DIY wheel refurbs..........discuss

I am looking at refurbing the wheels on my mondeo...... they are ST220 rims but i want to get rid of the diamond cut finish as they always go manky.....

Would this be the right way to do it....

Let air out of tyre and break the bead..........
Rub wheel down with fine paper ect..
Primer wheel
Paint wheel
Laquer wheel....

I could get someone to do them for £30 a rim but tbh i have always fancied having ago myself........

Anyone done it and am i on the right lines

Don't forget to flat your primer.

If they have started to go manky you'd be better getting them blasted to remove all the shit lacquer as once they've gone they will probably go again.

Whatever you do don't post pics of said wheel refurb just incase you have pics of your missus gobblin you etc etc. Don't think PF bandwith could cope with the traffic of 2 FAILS

here is some ive done tiff, best way to go is 180 grit for bad kerb marks then down to 320 grit the finish sanding process with some 500 grit fine paper then get a red scotch pad and do the full wheel with that also.

5 spoke comps before

prepped and masked

painted

finished

6 spoke comps

before

repaired and sanded

primed

finished

If your that worried about the lacquer flaking take some paint stripper to them and then etch primer the bare metal.

they look familiar

Tiff, if you can get them done for £30 a rim, I really wouldn't bother doing it yourself as you'll spend nearly that in paint etc

but as said

sand down
primer
wet flat
paint
laquer

moondust silver is a bright silver and what i did my escos rims in, make sure the primer has fully cured before flatting though and in this weather id leave for a couple of days depening on where you do it

Here's the wheels I did on my old car, just used rattle cans to paint them, I've got a media blaster at work though so that helped a lot!

Blasted

Painted

Its a good idea not to break the bead while you are sanding/rinsing off, as you will get loads of dust in where the bead will seat, thus affecting the seal, and you will also fill the tyre up with water!

I agree, on each of my wheels, I used a big can of primer, a tin of silver and a big tin of lacquer, that added up to about £20-£25 per wheel, if i were to do it again definately have it done pro as it doesnt work out any more expensive by the time you have fooked about!

Get yourself some of this stuff

Fill the chips with it then when its dry, which takes about 10 minutes, rub it down with wet and dry paper, dead easy!

Tiff, I have done a few sets now and can 100% say - dont bother. Yes you can get a decent finish etc etc but it will easily take a whole weekend to do them and is a ball ache.

By the time you have tallied up the cost of the bits you need and the effort involved - getting them done professionally will seem like the best option!!

If they are badly kurbed and badly chipped on the rim can you still fix them up??

I used that metal filler on mine, like filler but for metal where you mix the hardener in. They were really chipped scuffed but with ALOT of sanding they came up fine.

Not sure if someone powder coating is the same as wheel refurbishing, ie they just powder coat them and don't repair defects?

TOP TIP, if you do them yourself, use cling film to wrap the tyre, then tape it in place round the rim edge.

Then use a hair dry and shrink the cling film, hey presto perfect sealed tyres with zero chance of them getting pain on the,, it is also pretty durable whilst you move them around and quick to do.
