PF Photographers - Guidance needed!!

I have a Canon EOS 400D, which I bought not too long ago. I have used it a bit, but nowhere near what its capable of. I'm constantly aware that I need to buy further equipment and lenses to get the most out of it. I have recently considered buying a 70-300 lens.
However, I also think I need a compact camera as I don't always want to carry the DSLR. Additionally, I'd like something that can do underwater (we're going to the Maldives this year). So, this got me looking at the Panasonic DMC-TZ7, which is, I think at the top end of compact camera's. It does 12x Optical Zoom, claiming the equivalent of 300mm of focal length. There is also an underwater housing available for it. The camera is about £250-£300.

Now, my problem is this. I have a feeling that once I have it, it might mean that I don't use the DSLR atall. I know the DSLR is a good camera, but unless I spend fortunes on it, I'm not sure if I will ever see the benefits of it. I thought when I bought it that I might get right into photography, but I just don't think I have a big enough budget to do it properly. I really need a couple of lenses, a decent tripod etc etc.
Will I regret selling the DSLR, if I'm expecting this Panasonic to take fantastic pictures?
Not sure what I want you guys to do really, but maybe a bit of support/encouragement/productive advice?

Testing the future

i personally think the panasonic will do you for 90% of situations as you will have it with you. unless you purposelu go with the aim of 'doing photography' you just won't want the hassle of taking the dlsr (well, that's the reason i haven't bothered to by one)
