if its a normal single car sized garage your looking at 200-250 quid for the removal / discard

Mate

Being as I am from Solihull and have an asbestos garage that I want rid of I am quite up on this.

Firstly...
You can move it and remove it yourself- although trying to find someone to help you is a bit hard
Rules are generally that it needs to be double bagged and clearly labelled.
All the clothes overalls and masks you wear will also need to be double bagged and labbeled for disposal.

Any damaged boards or fibres should be damped down thourghly before you touch them as its the fibres and dust that kill.

Moving it requires a special licence or agreement from the council- ie transport to disposal.

You cant take it to Bickenhill

You need to take it to a properly licencesed tip.

Solihull Council have a contractor they use - I haven't had them round yet to quote but I'd be interested to hear what they quote you.

However................

If you have friends that fall in the Birmingham Council Area - if its double bagged and labelled clearly they will pick it up for free.

as a rule the arbestos based sheeting isnt very dangerous i cant remember the proper name for it but theres much more dangerous types out there, im buggered if id touch it. Youll generaly find the bloke who comes round to remove it will be 60+ years old and wont give a fuck anyway, it should be covered by paper work, most will do a cash deal aswell

i beleive that aplys only to normal asbestos, blue asbestos (i think its called blue, its basicly a more dangerous version of asbestos) has to be done proffesionaly, asbestos is really nasty stuff, DONT breath it in, it will stick to your throat and lungs and eventualy kill you, asbestos causes milignant lung cancer

Its only the disposal that is licensed. You can do what the fuck you like with it up to the disposal - its just you'd be pretty stupid to use it as a sledge or chopping board for your cheese.

Sorry guys...

I work in Construction so I understand the dangers all too well.

It was recently found all over the place in a school we're working on - the Main Contractor failed to carry out what is called an 'intrusive' survey so one of our guys was working in an area and now has to live with the fact he doesn't know if he's been infected with it... worst still he took his tools home...

They've so far tested his home, his kids clothes, his tools and his car to check for signs of it.

They dont fuck about with this stuff on building sites.

That said - garage boards are usually white asbestos which is the 'safe' stuff.

Ideal for a chopping board really.... Ebay 99p - no reserve.

You can have it coated and it'll be as safe as houses , job done .

Don't break it up! What ever you do don't do that
Asbestos needs to be removed and disposed of properly because of the material it is. As a whole piece it should be ok, but once you break it up the dust gets everywhere and then the probs stem from there.
Yes its pricey to get rid of too. I have asbestos tiles on my main house roof and to replace it is a very large dent in my overdraft

Do it properly or get it done professionally

as people have said, try not to break it up.

the cement sheets are only about 10% asbestos(crysotile asbestos, white),not really harmful, well not as much as the asbestos insulation board (AIB) which you get in houses and schools etc...something which a type 3 survey will find.

wear a paper suit and mask when stripping the roof and damp it down, be ok then.

not sure on getting rid of them but we have to book them into a certain tip and then take them in,all wrapped up.

we've had it at work where it is the safest type of asbestos

you shoudl really get a icensed person to come and inspect it first before you do anyting else

if you need to get it removed, just think of what else might have been contaminated with it over the years, things in the shed etc, so you may have to simply demolish the whole thing and bag and tag it all, all the while, spraying a hose pipe over the top of it day and night to stop it from drying out and the fibres getting airborne and into your lungs etc

you really really don't want to fuck about with it

as an example, our work sheeting, which is about 20 yards by 60 yards, was going to cost somewhere in the region of Ł17k to remove and replace but only Ł2k to seal up

I must have knocked down 30-40 garages made of this stuff when I was younger (used to clear rubbish, demo etc). No precautions in the back of the tipper. Changed a bit in the last 20 years!

Gave up smoking mind.

The biggest risk is that you step on a weak spot, fall through the roof and break your neck...

As long as you don't break it up/cut it/drill it, you should be fine. I'd wear a face mask, too, just to be sure...

I was gonna say, how much is there? I pulled down our old garage which was asbestos, doubled bagged it up and the council collected it for free.

Just about the only thing Birmingham City council can do right!

But as people have said, try to remove it in big pieces, and give the whole area a good soaking before you start, keeps the dust down. Might also be worth mentioning to your neighbours to keep the wondows shut if your on good terms with them. Fuck 'em if not.

It is a double garage at the end of the garden.Theres nothing wrong with the roof, i just want to replace it with wood as i don,t like the idea of asbestos in the garden with 2 kids playing around.

a good tip when your undoing fixings etc is to put some wallpaper paste on them then the dust sticks to that.
Im still alive have removed a fair bit with and without safty gear over the last 10 years...
probably drop dead next week tho lol !

That's fair enough, but as others have said, it's not going to do any harm unless it's disturbed. You more than likely grew up going to a school that was full of it... as have most people. The dangers are mainly for tradesmen cutting it etc.

But if you want to be extra safe then I don't blame you.

i was drilling the ceiling putting up some wardrobes the other day without thinking. Afterwards i thought the 'bobbly' ceiling might contain asbestos. The house was built in 1985.

Anybody know what kind, if any, would be in this ceiling. | think i read that the dangerous asbestos was banned in 1980 and other stuff 1985.

cheers

I went on an asbestos course at work by the HSE you'll probably be surprised to know that they stopped using it (white) in 2000!
