try taking the original one out carefully and put new one in its place see if same happens
if it does looks like you got a dodgy stick if not then you may have a dodgy slot on your motherboard

I was extra careful not to touch the chips, only held it at each end.
On the card it says: DDRR 184pin PC2100 256mb
I will try swapping them

Need to make sure both sticks are the same type and even though it sounds obvious make sure it's properly seated in the slot. I used to get the blue screen of death every now and then. No idea why. Then one day thought I'm sick of only have 256mb of RAM and went and bought the same again. Opened up the PC and found that I already had 512 I'd just left a stick in there for months not properly in the slot and totally forgotten I had it. I have no idea to this day how I missed that. I'm supposed to know what I'm doing

Turned the PC one and it Bleep loudly a few times but nothing happened, screen stated black
Put the original card back in and all is fine

Right then, after a little MSN chat with Ranj its all sorted
I took the original card out of slot 1 and tried it in slot 2 to make sure the slots were ok.
They were
So i thought i would try the new card in slot 1...............................and it nows works fine
Cheers for all your help guys and Cheers Ranj

best thing to do mate
reboot
keep pressing F8 till u get menu
choose "Command prompt only" I thnk it is
when u get "C:\>"
type FDISK
thru there you can configure the new drive.

nuts, DO NOT RUN FDISK THRU RUN...COMMAND!!!!!
you need to be in pure DOS or you'll fuck it up (thats if itll even run!)
change current fixed drive to the drive you wanna partition, then delete any partitions that are on it already (probably none tho) then add a primary partition (option1) of max size
then bob's your mother's brother
ps this new partition will now need formatting, but it should now appear as having a drive letter
ps it's easier in 2K/XP as you can partition/format it all in windows without having to run the text based fdisk program (for those that are interested its in control panel-admin tools-computer management)
