use a bit of common sense, look at the drive size!!!!

is drive D a percentage of drive C or is it the full size of the new Hard Drive

if it aint either, it aint picking it up

Appologies it wasn't C & D

But

C @ 25621
F @ 31 (smart media card)

I take it it isn't either ..... which goes back to my 1st question.

device manager is seeing it there, but FDISK not

all you need to do is initialize the drive within windows

right mouse click my computer and select manage

then click disk management

your drive should appear there and not set up

just right click it and select initialize it should format it and setup with a drive letter

Tony,

My Brother recommends same as I said, upgrade to XP, install new drive then use "Ghost" or similar to clone old drive to new drive. New drive will be best as master as it probably spins faster.

Will give that a try later when I get home

Was worried incase its some sort of clash or something. If its not being seen now will it be seen once XP is installed ? Only one way to find out I suppose.

sorry about last night guys

Nuts

first thing, got me calendar this morning, top notch and faster than i thought

with ur drive, if uve got a pc decent enough to hold xp (id say an ABSOLUTE minimum of 256MB of ram) Install a FRESH XP onto your new drive then copy all your documents/vids/pics across, then just format your old drive and just use it for dumping stuff.

but, if fdisk isnt picking up the new drive, im thinking something is wrong with the installation of the new drive.

on your motherboard, you will have 2 IDE channels, im presuming your using both because of the 2 hard drives and your gonna have a cd-rom.

so the ribbon cable that is holding 2 devices, just make sure one is set to primary and one set to master. Im presuming this has been explained to you.

Does it pick up the drive OK in the BIOS with the correct name?

<< wrong smiley? hahaha

Stu,

Thanks so far. Old drive is set as Primary new drive is set as slave on the same IDE cable. On the back of the new drive I have changed the jumper to be slave (both blocks to the right). BIOS is seeing it correct with the correct name Hitatchi xxxx whatever. Device manager has no conflicts and sees it okay too. FDISK just shows C and F as mentioned above.

wait a sec... i just thought of something.. doesnt fdisk only recognise drives under a certain size? 32gb or 60gb or something? that might be it!

anyway you really wanna be putting NTFS on there instead of FAT32

Its an 80 gig Jim.

I will wait until I get home again now and get the details to visit the Hitachi website. Im sure I have heard that in the distant past that it may not recognise it if its too big now you mention it. There may be a way of altering the jumper settings on the hard drive itself so it thinks its actually smaller.

Tony,

Laurence has sent a couple of e-mails that I have forwarded to you regarding this, here is the content of what he said:

"a clean install on the new Drive would be best but if he wants to keep software, upgrade win 98 to xp. If file format is fat32 he can then use ghost or something to clone drive to new one, or he could add new drive as a secondary drive. It probably spins faster than the old one though so would be better as main drive, it will start quicker."

"Also, once he upgrades to xp and connects the 80gig drive he can go into disk manager and format the disk, it wont see it as a drive till its formatted but disk manager will"

Hope this helps,

Martin

Does XP load over the top of 98 ? Current drive on Win 98 is FAT32 formatted.

If its not seeing it now due to the above (possible) size issue, will it see it later on with XP installed on it ?

Only way is to try it I suppose If Im offline later you'll know why

Tiff I hope your happily playing games on yours now

MANY THANKS to Nigel (Sketch) he diagnosed the problem and sent me over a patch for my version of FDISK. I dropped it onto my Win98 startup disc and low and behold when run up popped my new drive Was then able to partition and format it as normal.
