I'll probably get knocked for suggesting it, but for general use Carrera bikes are decent value for money. I've got a Kraken, and despite problems with utterly clueless Halfords mongs (not all are bad) it's been a good bike.
I got the doris a Kraken and its a perfectly good bike for riding on the road. The groupsets on the Halfrauds bikes are quite good for the price of bike too. I guess they have massive buying power.
I would say the Carrera range is ideal for the OP.

I took my Schwinn to a specialist and they stuck their noses up in the air because it was one of the range for under Ł500. There is definately some bike snobbery going on with some of the smaller specialists.
I used to have a Clockwork Orange which was a superb bike before it got nicked. and before that I had a nice Saracen which funnily enough was also nicked.
