I'll probably get knocked for suggesting it, but for general use Carrera bikes are decent value for money. I've got a Kraken, and despite problems with utterly clueless Halfords mongs (not all are bad) it's been a good bike.
I got the doris a Kraken and its a perfectly good bike for riding on the road. The groupsets on the Halfrauds bikes are quite good for the price of bike too. I guess they have massive buying power.
I would say the Carrera range is ideal for the OP.

Just to be a photo whore,here,s my cannondale lefty repainted FOCUS ST ORANGE.
I took my Schwinn to a specialist and they stuck their noses up in the air because it was one of the range for under £500. There is definately some bike snobbery going on with some of the smaller specialists.
I used to have a Clockwork Orange which was a superb bike before it got nicked.

and before that I had a nice Saracen which funnily enough was also nicked.
