What do you think you can drive quickest
This is a geniune question because most cars now are fwd and I was reading something in the Esc Rst section earlier.
i just wondered what most people were comfortable with.
In short are you fwd, reliant on the 4x4 to sort your probs out or are you old skool hanging the arse out there is people who can peddle anything but with some, one or the other is totally foriegn.
Disclaimer=I do shit my pants at times in my 2wd and dont blame others for doing the same
opions please

a FWD car can be as quick as a similarly powered AWD/RWD car but theres always that powercap at about 300bhp, anything much quicker than that and its a one sided battle IMO.
i love the security of AWD especially in rear biased cars as the arse can still come out if you want it to, and most of the time ONLY when you want it too, gives you a sense of security and encourages you to push it further.
havent driven a RWD car yet (drove a rwd tranny but..) but i still reckon id choose AWD for 99% of situations

Ha Ha tranny.Thats not takin the piss either. My mate has a 500 4wd Sapp and he dives his transit the same .Some people can not do the transition .In all fairness I would say you have more chance of living as a passenger with me in a fwd

most people can drive FWD fast as its easy to drive. I used to totally abuse by TB'd fwd puma everywhere as even if you fooked up with understeer just abuse a little left foot braking or lift off to sort things out and as long as you keep foot mashed to the floor and arent a complete tit on the left foot braking then you can always correct the oversteer.
4WD im definitely faster as in cornering speeds etc but my approach isnt so 100% as with rear biased 4wd keeping foot mashed to floor with oversteer = spinny fun being cossie geometry it understeers before oversteers so its mostly same to drive until you choose to put the back end out where you have to control the throttle to hold the slide. still i like the security of 4wd yet the fact if you want a bit of fun just boot it coming out a junction or roundabout with a bit of lock on and the rear swings out nicely. much better than fwd where you just spin front wheels and slide into the kerb a place i like is the a34 sliproad onto a500 heading back to hanley as it has a kink half way up so usually im just at limiter in 3rd at the kink and slam into 4th which kicks the arse end out nicely as you dip clutch for the change!
im still relatively inexperience in my 4wd car IMO and would love an airfield to play on for the day just to learn exactly where the balance is at varying speeds and how far you can push it before you point the wrong way! Got to play in the ice covered car park in front of house once id dug out drive but id want somewhere bigger to have proper slidey fun TBH.

Im definately more comfortable with FWD, but that because its all id ever driven / had tuition in, a couple of skid control courses over the years and plenty experience in FWD, im very happy in it and dont feel unsettled in any situations ive come accross and have always been able to stay in control or get it back under control with relative ease, so i can drive FWD quicker as i have complete confidence in myself and the car im throwing around.
Recently however i bought an E46 M3 as my daily driver, and ive been caught out a few times with the arse hanging out, luckily ive managed somehow to keep it all under control, but as im inexperienced with RWD its a bit unsettling, so ive phoned my local car tuition company and booked some more skid control courses with a bias on rear wheel drive, so hopefully with more experience and a bit of tuition i will feel happier with RWD.
as for 4WD i havent had enough experience driving these to really comment, but with 90% of cars these days being FWD i reckon there will be a number who are getting caught out with their first RWD experiences,

have had all 3 over the years all with about 250-300hp so pretty comfortable with anything really. started off with mk2 escorts and capri's. had a 300hp fwd cavalier,a 260hp xr4x4 tt, a bmw 540i and currently an e36 m3.
have had 5 old shaped transits over the last 15 years as well.
i would say it is easier to push a fwd to and beyond it's limits as you only have to back off to straighten it out, back off in a rwd and your through the hedge backwards. the transit go's sideways at 20mph so is nice and easy to "play" in. have spun it on roundabouts a few times when i ran out of opposite lock though.

fwd 195 bhp
rwd 350
4wd 330
i've all the above, and i lap any track i go to quickest in my fwd, mainly as i feel more comfortable with it, probably as i'm not the best driver, but i'm happy with fwd

Im A LOT more cautious in RWD because Im not experienced enough to get it back in control when the back end goes!!!
Looking forward to driving an M3 at Outlon Park soon though, should be fun!!

I had a 300bhp 200SX and currently have a E36 M3, i'm quite comfortable with RWD and controlling it when they step out but you have to show respect to the limits.
In a FWD you can take liberty's with them as they are easier to reign back in.
Never driven a 4wd car.

i dont drive but my dad loves his 4wd, subaru impreza estate non turbo thingy, says its so easy to go fast because you have constant grip. and its not got enough power to power understear (130bhp i think).
he spun his stag a few times when he had that and said it was a pain in the dry never mind wet.
and my mums car just spins the wheels after the tires have worn abit or the road isnt 100% flat and thats only a 1.3 yaris.
i imagine a fwd car to be easier to reach the limit off so even if the times dont prove your quicker in that youd deffinatly feel quicker.

depends on power, the FWD is cheaper, and allows more room in the cabin, hence why alot of modern cars are FWD alzo underdsteer is considerd safer, under 300bhp i think RWD will be faster than 4WD but above 300bhp i would put my money on the 4wd
4wd better in wet for sure lol

misses had an astra vxr was fast handled ok ( but was a vauxhall ) could never seem to get the power down when u want, just did number 11's and slid all over the road.
i've driven new and old shape m3's at work fast but always scared to keep my foot down round corners incase i end up driving backwards.
so my opinion has to be 4wd always feels planted. and if i wana get the arse end of my escort out i can just hate it when it snaps bk!
