i have had an engine with an arp stud and nut running aprox 350 bhp, it was spot on .
However my new one has long studs, but people will tell you different things, some say standard head bolts will handle 500 some say it wont.
Personaly at 450 i would be long studding, and i aint a fan of only doing 6, as i would see a weak point on the outer studs. Just my oppinion long stud the lot and do it properly just the once .

I hope this doesn't seem an odd question, why only 6 long studs?

I presume a yb has 10 headbolts?

put 6 proper studs in there, for the extra price its better than paying for a new block aswell next time if it crack them i guess

It's my RS500 block Dave is talking about here.I am worried about cracking the block as it has happened to me once b4 with the RS500 I owned. As Jim states above for the extra peice of mind I would rather get the 6 long studs done.

not the best description i know but im sure someone can explain better than me but thats the basics

you were lucky or seriously never drove it hard!!!every engine i ever left std head bolts on either blew head gaskets every five minutes or cracked the block
After 1992 and three or four fucked engines i did it properly and long studded..never looked back, build it properly once the first time and it will last

Would anyone on here recommend an ARP head stud kit for a 400bhp Zetec? (also going for a main stud kit)

I know some people say that the standard ones will cope, but I was going for a belt and braces approach.

well il tell you how hard it was driven egt probe was in my downpipe and saw 1000c dozens of times never batted an eyelid, 100 + runs of over 170 mph. thats how nms do there engines, my engine was built by an ex nms employee and was as reliable as they come. and it also had a turkish 200 block in it. ive seen if first hand if there built properly they are reliable no matter how hard they are used.

going back to btcc rs 500s here...why do you think ford/cosworth desighned a thick wall block????it was for the intention of long studding to with stand high boost pressures...
Im not going to mention names or engines but have seen a nms block cracked and have heard of another(not slating nms here)believe me it will happen especialy over 500 bhp!when the heads not clamped it will move around and on std head bolts sooner or later something will give...
the egt temp doesnt prove anything other than its fucking hot!!iv seen temps like that on a 300 bhp motor..
how many miles did/has your motor done at 2.2 bar??

cheers danny

its now done over 7k of hard work and its still going strong. i only mentioned the egt as it shows how much of a hard life its had. it was mapped by stu so the map was as good as it can be but it got worked hard and often. ive had a long studded t4 yb at 2 bar and standard bolts t4 at 2.2 bar and no problems with either of them. 2 out of 3 of my grp a headgasket cars have failed though and they were all strong stage 3 cars.
