Accidently revved ST170 to over 7500rpm
Hi all, just a quick question...
Was out in the car this morning on a NSL dual carriageway and went to overtake a car, I was in 6th at 70mph. Went to change to 3rd as the road was quiet in front but missed and got 1st, I come off the clutch and saw the rev counter needle touching the stop pin (7500+) the car immediatly slowed down and made a horrible sound. I went back to 5th and carried on, the car sounded fine and performed as usual.
I have since kicked its arse a little and it drives as it did, no effect on the performance and no un-nerving sounds.
Is there any things worth looking out for?

Must have taken and awful lot of force to get 1st in anyways as it hasn't got the strongest synchro...

the rev limiter would have stopped you doing too much damage.

It actually went quite easily into 1st, I didnt have to slam it in! When I come off the clutch it felt like it was being pulled back and I see the revcounter touching the stop pin.....
The rev limiter must only stop high rpms if accelerating with the throttle I guess lol
Never realised I was that lucky, poor car bless her!

The gearbox is turning the engine in those situations, not the air/fuel bang.

So, you were at 70mph in 1st gear for a brief moment... that must be c14,000rpm that the engine has had to deal with? If so, then I reckon all is not going to be well inside that engine!! Trade in time...
Cheers,
Grant

I have no idea, went for 3rd and got 1st! As already said, it went straight in with no excess force.

I've just done some calculations...
If I'm correct an ST170 doing 70 mph would be revving 12254 rpm in 1st...
Where was that F1 spec thread?

Im suddenly feeling very lucky! I doubt it was revving that high as I dipped the clutch as soon as I felt it slow down, I suppose 12k is possible if I hadnt!

thats a good indication of how strong the crank and rods are on a st170 engine,so with the oil pump issues sorted.easy a 9k screamer.

How will the rev limiter work when the engine is over driven by the road speed???
Should be fine as I used to spin a Pinto motor to 9200 revs with standard internalls

ROFL at the Pinto comment
I'm not fucking surprised it felt like it was pulling back a bit when you let up the clutch @ 70mph in 1st !
