Default Some of My "interesting" Cosworth History (Pic Heavy)

As of late I have been knocking cosworths a little too much, I have tonight been having a look through my pictures and have brought back some good memories and some bad.

So i thought i would go through some of my cosworth history with you good people. I would love to read some other peoples historys so i thought i would post some of my own, ill try and make it as readable as possible.

Where it all began

My pride and joy, I was 19 driving around in a yellow cabriolet turbo lol when a friend of mine at the time had this for sale, so after some persuading of my mum to actually let me have a car that powerful at that age she was purchased, my next problem was insuring the thing.

The year cost a whopping £3400. anyway with that being paid monthly and the purchase price of 3500 she was mine. I polished it every week and it was mint, One mark on the bosy above the rear wheel arch, leather the voodoos, etc etc.

However it started to go downhill, Was running 26psi and after a bit of a caning it would constantly overheat, I took the car to at the time the only tuner i knew which was a small one man band in essex at the time (although they are a fair bit bigger now)

anyway after discovering it had a 202 block and apparently some issues i opted for a rebuild, only to a standard ish spec but stage 3, when i got it back i thought it was the fastest thing in the world (good memories)

Unfortunately as all the doubters said at the time it was too fast for me and this happened.

so sadly she was dead. was so gutted its untrue but to be honest the car was the least of my worrys.

Anyway i moved on to a few lesser cars and back to rs turbos but always pined for another cossie. so when i was 22 i did buy another, unfortunately i dont have any pics but it was a silver 4x4 that i had some fun in and sold on. stage 1 spec but always felt that my first was my best and it never lived up to the magenta one.

so 23 and my dad buys an M5 (Brand new) he bangs on consistently how much better it is than anything ford has produced and how no cosworth would beat it and if it did it be broke at the end of the road etc etc.

so i say i guarantee i will own a cosworth that will beat youre M5. What happened next is something of a saga that i wont go into all the details again but a lot of you know the score and what happened.

I hadnt planned to do what i did but i did get back into cosworth ownership buying this.

less than a month later we had clouds of blue smoke out the back (why oh why do i buy cheap cosworths)

so i go to a place i though renowned for good engines, a whole host of exotica in the place and to be honest one of the cleanest escort cosworths i had ever seen. so yes i was bought.

anyway after going in for a diagnosis i was told engine fooked. spoke about the fact that my dad had an m5 and maybe this was the time to make a challenge. so we agreed to go for 550-600hp massively modded head wild cams gt 35 swedish plenum etc etc.

Here she is Out

and here she was going in

here she is plumbed in.

Ill let you take a break before the story continues...

So where was i.

Right after spending far more than i was originally quoted and being told by the tuner that i now had to give him 3k+ to put autronic on it to make 500hp, when we originally wanted 600 I was a little pissed.

A few pics during the build, I have over 100 and the bill was just shy of 9k!!! WITHOUT the turbo, or ancillaries.

SO Made a few phonecalls and a couple of days later i was on way to sunny Brum with it on a trailor.

Mr Hadland stripped the engine and found a whole host of problems, and basically he would have built the same engine for well under half the price. to say i was gutted was an understatement, I was at a crossroads that was going to cost me another 6.5k.

so after an honest and frank discussion with Martin (which i appreciated) I decided to give up chasing figures and start chasing the ownership of an escort cossie which at the time was my ultimate dream car!

I gave up and sold the car to be broke.

I nearly gave up on cossies as i thought i just cant continue having this luck, However i couldnt stay away so i thought the next best thing would be to get a low mileage mint one and keep it standard. (i thought i could do it)

So i found this, Cheap again (3500) funniy enough.

When i found it it was completely standard other than an exhaust, it had rotten back arches and a scratched rear bumper, It had been sitting for 5 years at least and needed serious cleaning too.

It broke down on me on the way home as the radiator was leaking and it overheated. Does it ever get any better?

heres a couple more pics

however it wasnt to be and i got bored as it was just far too slow. Sold it for quite a profit and to be honest have regretted selling it since that day.

so after that i stayed away again for a while thinking ive had most of the different variations now and not had much luck with any so its time to give up, I had an evo countless subarus 2 skylines etc etc but as we all know it just keeps pulling us back.

and as usual it pulled me.

I bought my last saff which was this one.

Stage 3 again, drove nice paid £3000 however there was blue smoke on boost.

That will be stem sills or maybe a couple of valve guides that horrible thing in my head was telling me, so as usual i bought it again!

You seem to like Saffs

Never that interested in RWD ones then?

I never have or never would ever consider buying a 4x4 Saff. Loved my RWD Saff, miss it

Anyway carrying on.

So the Smokestone one was set up and serviced to try and stop the smoke issue but didnt touch it so yet again it was rebuild time!

decided that i wasnt going to use a tuner and that i was going to do most of the work myself, I get some pistons (thanks Lamb Chop) and rebuilt it.

Me and the wife put it all back together and to be honest it was quite enjoyable. however just before it was all done and set up the opportunity came to finally purchase my dream car.

heres some more pics of the process

By now i had really had enough of saffs and decided that it was time to move on, so as said i bought my escort.

Well what do they say about never get youre dream car. By now i had done the saff thing (4x4 anyway) and at the ripe old age of 26 it was time to make my dream a reality so i bought my escort.

Heres a pic of before i got it.

and here are the two together. A picture i always wanted.

so my story is nearly at an end. Unfortunately after getting a fair bit of paintwork done and setting her up new rad etc etc, I finally realised it just wasnt what i dreamed of for all them years.

The best looking car ever but to drive it was no FQ340 and it was just not as quick or even as exciting as the m5 or GTR.

So i was made and offer and i sold it.

(here are the final pics)

And there it is... Hardly exciting but i thought i would share as im sure a lot of you probably think i hate cosworths and have not owned any, Maybe if i have a spare few hours one day i will do my RS TURBO history but that is extensive.

To be honest the Magenta one was still my most enjoyable and still the one i miss the most, so i hope i inspire a few of you to do the same as me as i would genuinely like to read people historys on here.

I think that its a bit different to reading the same old arguing that goes on here most of the time.

Thanks for reading guys.

Thanks im glad someone enjoyed it... Ive actually missed out one more saff but i only owned it for two weeks, it was another silver one and i sold it to a friend of mine who wrote it off.

So Come On Who Would Want Another After That Sort Of History?

I actually really want a 3 door next but im being messed around with a car im selling. I Must be crazy. I cant explain that cossie thing lol, dont think anyone can!.

Ps, Cosworth or no Cosworth ill still be at all the shows next year as i am most, so please if you hear me slagging them off on here put me in my place.

I love EM!

unlucky, My stupidity lol could be either. thing is my car history completely proves that you shouldn't buy 3-4k saffs, However i always buy in that price bracket.

cheers wullies, Wish i had more pics, ive got another one somewhere.

I really enjoyed this thank you

I remember reading about your troubled engine build a while ago ... you really have had some bad luck!

I hope others post their stories ... I wont post mine as being in AUS I'm lucky to have owned just one let alone a selection of models !

Good luck with the three door ...
