Default electrical problem. please help car cut out completly

i got a escort s2.

car has been fine then driving home 2day and all of a sudden my car cuts out. NO ELECTRICS ATALL. luckily it was 10 sec away from mine to rolled to house lol.

i looked at battery first. fully charged. i charged it anyway and came back few hours later and still no electrics ATALL.

then i went straight to the negative main lead that goes onto chassie. i fiddled with it and it was loose then pulled it and came straight off so was really loose oviously. so i thought its defo that.

i still cant get electrics on. i tried putting it on every part of metal i can on car but still nothing there. i also got black leads (jump lead) and put one end on negative terminal (battery) and other end somewhere on chassie. still nothing.

????????????????????????????????????????????????

Put the jump lead back on the battery negative terminal and onto a good ground point on the chassis.

Take a multimeter or test light and go to the ignition switch.

With the ignition off, make sure you have +12V on the red wire. If you do not, then you have melted one of the fuselink wires that run off the battery (small black wire on the positive terminal). I can explain more on this if necessary later.

If you have got +12V on the red wire, turn the ignition to position 2. Check the black wire for +12V. If there is nothing, then the ignition switch has died.

If you have +12V on the black wire of the ignition switch, go to the switch multiplug and check that you have +12V BOTH sides of the plug. If you do not have +12V both sides, the plug has melted inside. The switch will need replacing and you will need to replace the loom-side of the plug as well or it will happen again.

Check these first, if not let me know.

Replace the earth lead @ the battery with a good size one and I normally recommend getting a length of 4-gauge amp wiring, a couple of the proper size gold-plated terminals and putting that on in addition (not in place of) the earth cable. This takes some of the load off of a 20-year old wire and you could be surprised how much better all the electrics are afterwards.

As you think it sounds like a poor eatrh or a positive wire could be shorting the system.

I wouldn't rule out the battery completley. It really needs to be holding 13-14 volts. An S2 will need at least 11V to start, any less and nothing will happen.

also just because a battery is holding say 13.4 volts or what ever after a charge, this doesnt mean its healthy. A lot of people done realise its AMPS that you should be looking at. It you can, do a leak down test, this is the only way to test the battery properly.

A classic dead battery is when you go to start the engine and all you get is the sound of the solonoid clicking bake and fowards in the startermotor.

Have you checked the fuse box to see all fuses are intact? If a wire is shorting out this will have blown a fuse!

i had a mk 4 xr3i that used to cut out i found that the battery voltage was dropping it turned out to be a corroded wire on the battery.
