Default Help needed toilet training my dog!!

Need some help toilet training my dog!

Trevor is now 6 months old and still having issues!!

In short when we are in the house he goes to the back door and barks when he wants to go out, we let him out, he does his stuff, comes back and we give him loads of attention and a small treat. Perfect!! However when we are out or during the night its a problem!

He has free roam of the dining room / hallway / kitchen when we arent there and he seems to just crap where he wants, primarily the kitchen floor. This can happen during the night or day when we are both at work. We have started to put puppy pads back down which he is weeing on ok but still shitting whereever he wants, but obviously ideally we want him not to go until we are home and let him out.

How can we stop him from going to the loo or hold it when we arent there? I understand that it will happen on the odd occasion but its most mornings / night times now. He's been eating dried dog food with sometimes a bit of chicken or tuna and has recently stopped having milk in the evenings. Could it be his diet? He tends not to eat a great deal during the day and mainly feasts during the night (food is always left out).

Any ideas what we can do? We do put him in a crate if he is generally naughty, or does have an accident on the floor if we are there, but cant see it being right if we put him in it as soon as we get home?

Are we expecting too much of him at 6 months old?

Any help would be great, here is the little shit monster in question!:

Cheers
Chris

Ah ...

Few things can be done ..

Dont let him out when he needs to go, Then when he goes put some News paper under him while he does the buisness.

If you come down and hes done the buisness ... Pick it up (Shit) and put it on some news paper next to the door and leave it for a while. End of the day, If it needs to go and you are not in atleast it will go on some news paper or even a Cat litter type of thingy ..

I had right bother with a dog that wouldnt do the buisness outside of my Back garden ... Went on for ages .. In the end I carried it out of the gate while it was shiteing ... Worked a treat ..

Good luck

Aye ... So basically you need him to do the buisness in a certian place if you are not there to let him out?

The dogs bladder will strech and they can hold shites for ages .. Just need a way to motivate him into nipping it in?

Do that mate but he doesnt normally eat until later at night. Perhaps I should take his food away at night, eventually he'll realise and eat / shit a bit earlier?

Ah ... Feed times !

My last dog we always kept his food bowl full ... This equates to inconsistent shites ... Good for the dog . Bad for the owner.

Have to get him into a routine ... And the dogs still a puppy really ..

Our bull terrier has a small breakfast, banana at dinner and then his tea, and he's fine

Can hold it in for hours, esp if its raining

What would the 'normal' type routine be do you think for a rat dog? Twice a day, perhaps once before we got to work (she leaves around 9:00am) and once early evening say 6pm?

Don't believe you not that little cuttie!

We have never left food out for out dogs or even water, but they are crafty, as you are finding out, do learn and bark to go out and even ask for tit bits and water. One our dogs still goes on his paper we leave down just in case and he is 6. We take ours out just before go to bed so last thru night. Our dogs only have water now, stopped milk as you have as not really good for them. In past when working we could leave ours for 3-4 hours and they be OK, but never left out dogs all day on their own.

You just have find routine right for you and your dog as all dogs are different.

cage him during the night or give him a single room. they don't like to shit where they sleep and neither does he - he goes in the kitchen

give it a while then you can let him once he realises he's supposed to hold it.

Did you get my text with the picture?

Ok cool cheers chaps, i'll try and single him out in the room and see what happens. Think i'll try the diet thing as well, feed him a little earlier.

we feed our lhasa at 7:00 am, if he hasnt eaten it by 8 we lift it up, feed him again at 6, then lift it up at 7, they soon learn.

be warned though, the can be stubborn little things and may go a day or 2 without eating, but they will never starve themselves

feeding him at regular time every day will help, be cosistent. also, let him out after hes eaten or been to sleep or had a play and praise him when he does hes business in the correct place, and correct him when hes doing wrong with a sharp NO, the worst thing your doing is using hes crate when hes naughty, the crate is a great training aid when it comes to toilet training. ive got a 10 wk old basset hound and theyre known to be slow learners when it comes to toilet training and hes on 3 meals a day until 6 months of age but theyre given to him at the exact same time every day, he sleeps in hes crate at night and he only gets up needing to go to the toilet once a night but he wines to let you know he wants to go as dogs dont like messing where they sleep, we take him out the back and he does hes business and gets lots of praise, dogs like pleasing their owners so be consistant with the praise and correction and he will learn.

Interesting thread, im finding that murphy is picking it up quite well ( hes 8 weeks on monday) everytime i put him in garden he is doing a wee and a poo, hes pooing overnight on the kitchen floor, but he has his last meal at 8pm so hes got 3hrs before bedtime.

I was under the impression if you feed them too late, then itll make them empty their bowels through the night too.
