Default Ram Question

my computer has 256mb of the new style ram in it. my old one has 320mb of the older type.

my motherboard has slots for both styles. i wanted to chuck the lot in, but its not reading the old style.

i took the new style one out and its accepted my 320mb of the old stuff.

now this is probably a silly question, but i am better off using the old stuff thats more, yeah?
