Why is it that when you advertise a car on ebay with buy it now or best offer you get every dick and his dog offering £1000 less than the asking price, im currently selling a car for £2900 and my best offer (by email) has been £1900, its a little corsa active late 2003 low miles with every extra including full length sunroof and thats the best offer, i was expecting lower offers so put it up slightly more than i wanted but a £1000 off i think is a piss take.

Surely if you have £2000 to spend you dont look at cars for £3000

sorry rant over.

because they are traders preying on the fact that you might want to sell quick.

Then they will advertise at the proper price but not on ebay as everybody on ebay wants to pay peanuts.

I have used ebay three times to sell a car. Each and every transaction has been excellent. No messing, no people trying to beat the price down. It may help that I start at 99p, but at least this way I do not waste time trying to sell the car at a price I just will not achieve, starting so low then the car achieves its true market value. (not having a pop at D16PJM here about how he values the corsa by the way).

I may be in a minority, but ebay gets my vote!!!!

We sell a lot of cars through ebay classified ads.

It's actually a better response rate than Autotrader now. We scaled down the amount of stock to 15 on at any one time [from 50] to cut the costs down and Autotrader is STILL £575 +VAT a month.

ebay however is £82.50 a month including VAT for up to 50 [I know cos I'm doing the bills right now ]

Exchange + mart are £30+VAT a week for the same amount which I'm considering a trial with at the moment but who the fuck uses them anymore??

Autotrader's website has got SHIT in my opinion now as well. It's not as quick and intuitive and the online uploading tool for dealers is a pain in the cunt.

You do get a lot of timewasting emails through ebay but hardly nymore than I get through the autotrader. I think people are starting to realise there's other places to buy cars from and most of the dealers I know are getting fedding up with the stranglehold Autotrader had on the market and jumpsing ship.

None of our cars are sold via ebay in an auction, they're all classified adverts.

If someone turned up to buy a car and didn't try to haggle, I would probably die of shock

God yes.

There's an inverse relationship between price and expectation. The cheaper the car [say, a sub £1k part exchange] the more they seem to expect for their money. There's loads of reasons for it but tbh, I'm going to dedicate as much time to answer that on this thread as I do with the people... yep. That's it

Back on topic for the thread starter.

The reason is you're selling a car which will attract first time buyers and young people. They understand the anonymity of ebay and can hide behind an ebay pseudonym, sending off 100 offers like you got in 10 minutes.

Then they can show mummy or Carl's daddy who has replied in a positive way and how much they can get bought for £2k.

You also get the people as mentioned above who send speculative offers, I do it myself but always leave a number. No-one has ever rang back and abused me [yet] but I have bought some cars at the right price to go again with a profit in.

People that offer you silly money over the internet, 99 times out of a 100 have no intention of buying it. The ones that ring up or leave a number with their enquiry are likely to be more serious.

Honestly, if I had a £1 for every silly offer I've had on cars this week alone... well. I'd have about a tenner but you know what I mean

I found, when selling my grandads car, that people dont read the advert (aswell as non-car adverts). I clearly put that I dont want anything in part-ex as grandad died any jsut need to sell the car. So what messages do I get, do you fancy a part-ex on your car (a 1 year old fabia with 790 miles). A bmw X5, merc clk or a polo tdi was what I had been offered(3 different messages).

This wasnt eBay, it was just on AutoTrader & PistonHeads, but still.

The car is priced at the same or less than others but at that price im willing to drop around £300

If you advertise something under market value surley everyone will think there is something wrong with it or you will get offers of £1500.
I know its a bad time of year to sell cars so may just hold on till the new year.
