Help me choose a new laptop

PC-personal computer. laptops come under that...
Laptops and desktops, both pcs...
The OP asked for opinions, I gave him mine, you tried to attack me. If you honestly are arguing that Dell are a good make, you clearly have no idea about computers.

PC for everyday use is a complete and utter waste of time - they are a noisy pointless eye sore.
Give me a trusty Dell laptop all day long over any PC.
Any if you want to play games make your life easier and buy a PS3 etc. Push the disc in and off you go.
Mind you if you fancy playing games with three 30" monitor at a resolution of 7680 x 1600 then this kind of PC setup IS the way forward:

I have a Dell D630 T9300 2.5Ghz 4Gb (soon to be 8Gb) machine running Windows 2008 server, my dev evironment, SharePoint/MOSS and I do not see any performance issues at all....
IMO all a suped up PC is used for is bragging rights on the internet (unless it's being used as a proper server or pure hardcore gaming machine as above) - look at my benchmark rubbish.....!lol

YOU STARTED WITH THIS!!!!
WTF? "always buy Dell?" Have you been smoking some messed up shit? Dell are shit, they use poor quality parts, their customer service is dreadful, and don't get me started on the 'aparently' 'game orientated' piles of shit that xps' are...
I'm not a big laptop person (I build desktops), but fucking hell, I know dell are shit.
Basically, look for the best spec for the money (outside of dell ofcourse) basically the bigger numbers, get asmuch processing power as possible (GHz) ram doesn't matter as much as its so cheap now anyway you can always upgrade. PM me if you find some n want opinions

There is at least 2 IT professional on this thread reccomending DELL and lots of normal users....
in fact its pretty much everyone APART from you....
have you considered its YOU smoking 'some messed up shit'???
Their customer service is awesome in my personal experience when a mates girlfriend found some dodgy emails on my computer that he had borrowed and threw it out of the bedroom window.
I had a brand new BETTER spec laptop in under 2 days. NO questions asked!
I love Dell

You think I attacked you??? Your post was MUCH more aggressive and arsey in my opinion.
It was also NO help at all IMHO!!!
oh look... there is Dannn.... yet ANOTHER happy Dell laptop user!
out of interest Slamz.... how many Dell laptops have you owned?

I've been building pcs for years now, and judging by alot of 'it professionals' you can get that title by know how to press alt+ctrl+del. I know alot of people that are not 'IT professionals' that would wipe the floor with most apparent professionals. Go post on a decent pc forum, asking about dell, they'll all tell you they're shite.
But go on, carry on taking the piss about something you 'think' you know the most about. Just because some pc world worker told you they're top quality, doesn't mean they are...

well done for "building PCs for years now".
I also know a lot of IT professionals that I wouldn't let work a kettle, but would certainly not consider myself to be one of them.
During my 15 years in IT I have either owned or worked with on a daily basis laptops/netbooks and tablet PCs from Sony, IBM/Lenovo, Toshiba, Compaq, Hp and Dell, (Most recently Dell, HP and Toshiba) and would say that other than the slightly weak construction of the DVD ram drive in my current E6400 due to it being apre-production model that Dell provided on loan and "forgot" about, Dell are the ones to get.

BTW - GingeRS - you're right about Vaio machines.. they always look the bollocks, but generally cost significantly more for a equivalent machine and IME are a complete nightmare when they do wrong... particularly regarding drivers.
do you have any more specifics re what you need? HD size? what you'll be using it for? (e.g. net only/videos/gaming/work related stuff like docs and spreadsheets?)

All mine have been fine. No problems whatsoever and perform well at a good price. There will obviously be exceptions with every company... nothing's perfect.
The thing I like about Dell is how you can specify exactly what you want. No hastle: they just build it, send it out, and it works.

take the piss all you want. They're low quality shit that will break.

We've had a Dell desktop for 8 years or so, that hasn't gone wrong once... not a thing. My laptop, other than the battery(I kept it plugged in constantly charging), has also been faultless. Can you and your computer-building(gifted) mates tell me when it's going to go wrong... just so I can book it into the shop in advance? Cheers.

Bought the Acer 5535 (2ghz, 4gb ram, 180gb HD) about a month ago, worth looking at or similar for £400. Really good spec, just wider than usual screen, doesn't look/feel half as cheap as the other 'crappy' makes....love it

Buy the best one you can find from either Asda or Tesco. My wife bought one about 2 years ago and after 10 months it kept playing up so instead of messing around trying to sort it out she took it back for a full refund which was nice!
Do Dell still charge you a bloody fortune if you have it delivered?

My old IBM one was the best made one I've ever had, i've had Toshiba, Dell and Acer too and would recommend them all.
I just bought a decent Acer from tesco for my dad but its out of stock now, 250gb memory and 4GB Ram, 1.8 mhz dual core etc etc for £350, they have other similar specs tho, with free delivery

Lmao @ the Dell slagging
With laptops they went through a phaze 3/4 years ago latitudes ect when their range was below par but the last 2 years with the XPS range ect they are superb machines.
Customer service?!?!?! No problems at all sometimes they don't even want the damaged equipment back! Our dell business support send us harddrives within 4 hours!!
Id go with if you can get for £400 a HP business laptop a dell or an Acer
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/GRADE...ET/version.asp
SUPERB and so robust and reliable - ive had mine 2 years and believe me it's been to and from my house everyday to work and im talking thrown on the back seat of the car no bag and it's still like new - very strong and decent (but not breathtaking) spec.
