Be glad it wasn't over 100mph.

Tell your insurance next time you insure that you have been a knob and got caught speeding HTH.

He can't ban you. He can give you points which are applicable by law. In the event that they should tot up to 12 points then he cannot give you points and you must go to court.

But yes, be glad you weren't caught at 100mph.

3 points I presume you got?

You should inform your insurer immediately, NOT the next time you renew.

3 points doesn't do much damage these days mate, how old are you? If you have had your license more than 2 years just take it on the chin there is nothing else to do these days

if i'm right until he's had license 2 years he can only get 6 points max so if copper gave him 6 points there and then he would be in court as in he's reach max points so he could of got ban that way

As I said above the copper cannot ban you, it must go to court.

3 points is nothing on insurance. I believe the only thing Insurers dont take kindly to is TS offences and Drink Driving offences.

Correct.

Just a word of advice though... Points do not mean prizes so don't aim for 12

Don't forget to inform your insurance company now of your points, not when you renew.

First thing the copper can't ban you period, this is done in a court, it is NOT a automatic ban at 12 points or for 30 over the limit, it more often is but there are countless exceptions.
As said legally you need to inform your insurer NOW, as if undisclosed the insurance is void, so if plod stops you and checks as he's allowed to do, what state you said your license was in points wise and found you had three points undisclosed he will nick yo there and then for driving without insurance, which I'm sure is 6-9 points.
My bro was let off a ban for paying a higher fine, he is or rather was on 13 points, he's now down to 6.
Most insurers ignore 2 speeding convictions.
I myself went to court today, Crown Court(Norwich) that is on a charge of dangerous driving, there was even video tape of the incident(from camera van), but the judge accepted my argument that the "driver" could not be identified, as they were wearing a balaclava, and being the registered keeper could not infer ownership let alone the driver being said keeper.
I won cps lost, and offered "no evidence", the muppets could have had a section 172(failure to disclose) but by the time they got greedy with a more serious charge they were out of time to do anything about the 172.
There is a cast iron way to get off a speeding charge, it costs Ł37, pm me if interested.

3 points for a new driver will effect insurance more than a long term driver getting 3.
my insurer used to add 15% for every 3 points with another 25% on reaching 12 but im a long term driver.
only a chat with your insurer will give you the proper info.

While we're on the subject of points, does the expiry date go from date of offence or date of conviction?

offences are different. speeding and insurance is from date of offence.dangerous driving, drink driving or death by careless etc is from date of conviction iirc.

yep, but you still need to declare for another year to your insurer then change insurers after that year and tell them nothing.

It doesnt have to be over 100mph to get a ban,you only have to exceed the limit by 27mph and you can get banned ie 88mph in a 60 could get you banned.Have got 14 points at the mo all for speeding and am still not banned

Who said it has to be 27mph over to get a ban? I got pulled doing 80 in a transit on a dual carriageway, 20mph over the limit and picked up a 6wk ban for it. Points, bans and whatever are all down to the judge/magistrates discretion, I've been in court for offences I should have got points for, and possibly banned, and walked out with nothing, yet the speeding in the Transit I was advised to expect points, but ended up with a short ban, its all down to the magistrate on the day.
Likewise, 12points doesn't always mean a ban, I've had 13 in the past and kept my licence.

You can also get banned for speeding, when you are doing LESS than the speed limit.
People who ignore temporary 20 limits etc on new gritted roads can be banned as recent case law said/decided any temp speed measure put up by council or contractors was within law, ie enforcable, whereas previously it wasn't.
Another is speeding still less than the limit, but when it is not safe to do so, 25mph through a really heavy packed saturday market in the High Street for example, all it takes is a copper to consider it to be too fast.
