Default Japanese Akita's, has anyone owned one??

Hey all,

As i've seen on here a lot of you are dog owners, i'm wondering if any of you own or have had experience with Japanese Akita's, me and the gf are looking to get one in the new year and would love to hear of your experience's with this particular breed.

Are they good with kids,as we have a 6 year old, are they easily trained as we'll be buying a puppy, whats there temprement like etc.

Any info, pictures would be great.

CheeRS

Baz.

Hi, I have and American Akita not a Japanese. he's a lot of hard work as most of them are.

he's extremely clever and very loyal, he learns very quickly.

he is also VERY stubborn, will need training from young

he will not accept anyone new (unless they're willing to put a lot of time in), so it will be hard for your 6yr old to have any friends over. this is also made worse by the fact that he is fluffy and cute looking so everyone wants to say hello and touch him. cant let him off lead in park because they can be agressive to other dogs.

they were bred to be a fighting dog, so dont get one just cos you like the way it looks, its very deceiving. your car will not be stolen if he's in it lol

Don't own one personally but a family on my road have a few and used to try socialising my Bullmastiff Vin with them when he was a lot younger, really awesome dogs.... after mine went past 18mths or so though it's been impossible. He used to get on with their big one Kaiser but literally only took one walk when another bitch was around and haven't got near eachother since. Akita's have a similar mentality to Rotties from what I've seen, not as cumbersome as big mastiffs but like carl s said very stubborn and driven...

Always really wanted an Akita.

Yeah alot of people tend to make the mistake that certain breeds where bred for fighting. They actually wasnt, most breeds were bred for a purpose but ended up being used for fighting because of their fierce nature etc

Mate has one, and kids. Lovely dog, but even he doesn't trust it 100% with the kids.

Get something sensible.

we've got one and he's perfect, main thing with them is Discipline, they need to know YOUR the boss! once thats sorted they're very loving and loyal dogs...

as for children we've got a 3year old and neighbours are all kids between 3/4 and 12/13 and he's great with them....

But like any dog you wouldnt leave them alone with any children atall!!!!!

Discipline really is the word with these, Like most big, strong dogs you have to keep on top of them. Cracking animlms tho.
