what a launch the escos had tho, and lets be fair if it was like most cosworths eg running on average 300bhp then im sure it would of won that drag race

that bloke needs a kick in the bollocks for racing a escort cosworth designed for going sideways with the big wing on the back against them other 2,why not a version with no big spoiler ???
and if the car had the big turbo instead of that wheezy premature ejaculation diddy thing i think it would of been a different outcome.
also that ford has got old suspension and may of not seen a tune up in over 13 years.
frankel ??? more like wankel !!!

It was a simple (if not particularly definitive) comparison of the three cars. There's no reason why they should have sought out a wingless version when by far the majority of the cars sold to the public had wings.

Cossie owner proper jumped the start too

yeah but Dan that wankel makes a big thing about it not winning the "race", if you got the right car for the "race" you would see a different outcome i'm sure.

maybe if the "race" was against a official 300hp Ford-Wolf escort cos it would make for a more interesting conclusion lol.

i'd love to see the "race" include some hairpins and a few 90 left rights though

i reckon the start was more the escort showing its superiority alas the peanut sized turbo lost the plot in the end

good point made there about the wings mate

still would like to see a 300bhp escos vs a focus rs im 100% certain that the escos would win

i must say though that at this years rsoc national meet the cars that impressed me the most were the mk1 focus rs some of them were really quick and as they have got older they have become better looking in my eyes

Why pitch a modified car against a standard one though? Surely the point of his little video was to show how far car technology and dynamics have improved, and to say how good the Focus' are.

The Escort is a 15 year old car, so it's simply not going to compete like-for-like against a brand new Focus RS, even round the bends. And to expect it to is a little bit silly.

Sure a modified Escos could have more than held its own in that competition, but that wasn't what the video is about.

why not , if a official ford 17 year old model with just under 300hp goes against a new car and kicks its jacksy it makes for more interesting viewing imo.

5th gear tested the very same escort round tycroes against the same focus i think and the escort won, maybe if someone gets the escort and takes it round somewhere in the wet against the new focus you would see the same outcome.
i still think a big turbo with no top spoiler would see a big difference than the one autocar did use in the "race".

maybe thats a fast ford feature right there a std bt ford escort cosworth versus a new focus rs round oulton parks rally course .

Its only right in a shoot out like that to have standard against standard otherwise where does it end, most Escorts came with the wing so it should be on the car in my mind.

BUT

In real terms this test proves nothing except that a car with 300BHP & 2wd beats a car with 220BHP & 4X4, big shocker

if as i think loads of people in the media and on here don't understand why the escort looks like it does maybe this explains it.............

Ford put a lot of effort in the chassis design of the Escort RS Cosworth. The bodyshell is extremely rigid as it takes a torque of 6000 N/m to induce a body torsion of 1 degree! The car's aerodynamics are also exceptional considering the additional drag produced by the cooling drag and spoilers. The car's Cx index is "only" 0.38 when a normal Escort has a Cx index of 0.34. Additionally the Escort RS Cosworth is the only production car that generates a positive downforce (which is the least one can say considering the huge spoilers fitted). The front spoiler and splitter will generate a 45 Newton down force at 180 Km/h while the rear generates a 190 Newton downforce at the same speed. Note that the splitter installed beneath the front spoiler is adjustable in three positions and that the downforce stated above is produced with the splitter in its middle position. The Escort RS Cosworth testifies of its racing heritage in another field too, accessibility to all mechanical parts. The gearbox, suspension, engine and differentials are all very easily and individually accessible for servicing purposes. This is not often the case in previous and other current production

therefore its not supposed to go fast in straight lines but stick to the road as that was fords idea. rallying+stick to the road, win rallys, sell cars.

Cozzfather the spoilers are for straight line stability, and despite the good downforce they do have a fairly low drag coefficient

If you think they work best in corners to 'stick the car to the road' going round a corner you're a mentalist!

It was available from 1992-96 and in very limited numbers. It was instantly recognisable due to its large whale tail rear spoiler. The main selling point was the Cosworth YBT engine, a highly tunable turbocharged 2-litre engine which put out 227bhp in standard trim. Tuned outputs have gone over 1000bhp.
Ford developed the car around the chassis and mechanicals of its predecessor, the Sierra Cosworth. 'Ghia' further modified the Escort bodyshell to accommodate the larger Cosworth engine and transmission. Designed under the guidance of Rod Mansfield and John Wheeler of Ford's SVO department, the Styling was carried out during 1989, by Stephen Harper (Designer) at MGA Developments in Coventry. The body tooling was created the coachbuilder's Karmann at their facility in Rheine, Germany, from where the cars were manufactured. Changes were made to the engine management system and a new turbocharger was fitted. Permanent four wheel drive with a 34/66% front/rear split came courtesy of an uprated five speed gearbox as used in the Sierra Cosworth. Recaro sports seats came as a standard fitment. Later production models were available without the oversize tail spoiler although by far the majority were still ordered with it. Like its Sierra predecessor, they are commonly nicknamed "Cossie" by enthusiasts.[1]
The Escort Cosworth was a rare car, with 7,145 vehicles produced from the start of production on 19 February 1992 until the last car rolled out of the factory on 12 January 1996.
Two versions were produced. The initial 2500 units were "homologation specials" used to get the FIA accreditation for entry into the World Rally Championship. They were fitted with a Garrett T3/T04B turbocharger. Among these initial units, a handful were badged as Motorsport versions, these lacked certain refinements such as a sunroof and sound deadening. The second generation, starting production from late 1994, were fitted with a Garrett T25 turbocharger, a smaller unit which reduced turbo lag and increased usability in everyday driving situations. With these later models, the 'whale tail' spoiler became an option.
[edit] Motorsport

The car was to be Ford's new rally car, and very successful it became with its total victories amounting to 8 in Group A guise. Drivers included famous victor at the 1994 Monte Carlo Rally, the Frenchman Francois Delecour, future quadruple World Drivers' Champion Tommi Makinen (who took his maiden event victory for Ford in Finland that same year before departing for Mitsubishi for 1995), as well as the Belgian, Bruno Thiry and, from 1996, 1990 and 1992 World Drivers' Champion Carlos Sainz of Spain. One-time 1988 and 1989 back-to-back title-winning force for Lancia, Miki Biasion and 1991 Rally Catalunya winner Armin Schwarz were among the other fabled pilots to be seen behind the wheel.

An Escort Cosworth on a stage rally, driven by Malcolm Wilson

After modifications were made to the car to make it a World Rally Car for the 1997 and 1998 seasons, it went on to score two more victories for the Ford Motor Company Rally Team, now based in Cumbria and being run by Malcolm Wilson's M-Sport. With Thiry, Ari Vatanen (on a one-off podium-scoring basis at the Safari Rally after Thiry suffered an injury) and four-time World Drivers' Champion Juha Kankkunen now behind the wheel of the cars, the Escort name finally bowed out of works rallying altogether after a double-podium at the season-ending 1998 [[Rally of Great Britain. The escort rs cosworth had amazing opportunities to win world champion, more that Lancia delta integrale but the technical support was not always the best and always with the testimony of Carlos Sainz that also drive the Lancia delta integrale in his career.]].
The Escort RS Cosworth was produced until early in 1996 when the EU introduced a tough new set of noise regulations for motor vehicles and Ford decided to stop production rather than change the car to meet the new noise regulations. Despite this, the now-modified RS Cosworth was used by Ford as their factory rally car until it was permanently replaced by the Focus WRC for the Monte Carlo Rally of 1999.

yes thats right!

you could say sliding a escort cosworth around a corner on the col de turini is mental but thats rallying.

have a look at this video, its a cracker and you can see what a escort cosworth was designed to do,non of this straight line stuff.

Ford Escort RS Cosworth history.
The history of the Escort RS Cosworth started many years before the first car of that specification was produced. The history of the Escort Cosworth started at the same moment Ford decided to put a turbo onto the old trusty Pinto block and install it in the Sierra RS Cosworth. That was back in 1984 and the engine produced 204 hp. The Sierra RS Cosworth was first produced in 1986 as an homologation special for rally. 5000 examples was required to get a car homologated for group A. It was not particularly successful, mostly due to the lack of four wheel drive; no wins in group A rally. But it did have a certain amount of success in touring car championships. Then there was the Sierra RS500.
Based on 500 examples of the Sierra RS Cosworth the RS 500 had more spoilers and 224hp. The extra airintake above the numberplate and the extra tip on the rear spoiler are the easiest way of distinguishing it from a standard Sierra Cosworth. Only twenty more hp was produced from the following additions: Garrett T4 turbocharger, much larger intercooler, 8 injectors (only 4 were used on the standard car), 9mm bigger intake manifold and thicker engine block walls. Probably Ford's most successful car to date it did win the only World touringcar championship that was ever held, and had 40 victories in row in the BTCC.
When the required 5000 examples of the three door Sierra RS Cosworth was produced Ford felt that they needed a car with the same amount of power but with more comfort and ability to carry the family too. The answer to these requirements was the rear-wheel-drive Ford Sierra Saphire Cosworth. It used a standard 4 door sierra body with the the same engine, suspension and drivetrain as the 3-door Sierra RS Cosworth. the body was modified slightly from the standard Sierra with different airintakes, fog lights, and a new lower lip on the front bumper. A small rear boot spoiler was also added to counter aerodynamic lift at high speeds. After the RS500 there was an empty slot in the Ford motorsport department. They needed a new car to keep up with the Lancia Delta HF Integrale and the Audi Quattro. This lead to the development of the 4-door Sierra RS Cosworth 4wd. It looked very similar to the Saphire 2wd, but underneath the body the changes very many. It had Ferguson 4 wheel drive system with two viscous couplers; one on the center diff, the other on the rear diff. Torque split was 34% to the front and 66% to the rear wheels. The engine was improved, having changed 80% of the parts compared to the Saphire Cosworth. The changes included new modified RS500 block, stronger head and stronger pistons with new gudgeon pin placement to decrease piston slap. A new Garrett T03 turbo, new intake manifold and bigger intercooler was also installed. This lead to a powerincrease of only 224hp, but much more was available when tuning the engine. But none the less; it still did not fulfill Ford's expectations. It did not score a single group A win in it's two years of rallying. The reason the Sierra Saphire didn't produce any decent results was probably due to it's weight and size. Ford simply needed a smaller car. The suitable model for the time was the Escort. But there was no Escort that could be homologated as a rallycar as it had to have turbo and four wheel drive. So a new variation of the Escort model had to be produced. Ford knew they had a great engine in the YBG that sat in the the Sierra Saphire, so Ford's master plan was to simply put the engine, drivetrain and suspension of the Sierra Saphire 4wd into a modified and strengthened Escort shell. But, to Ford's dismay I suppose, it was simply not possible so a new chassis and body had to be built specifically for the Escort RS Cosworth. After 400 new parts a new car was born: more than twice as stiff and strong a standard Escort Chassis. The Escort Cosworth shares only 50% of it's body panels with the standard Escort. The most prominent features of the new body is: New hood with two vents helping in the removal of hot air from the engine compartment. New wider front arches with air exits from the engine in front of the doors. New wider rear wheelarches. New Front bumper with huge airintakes and low front spoiler with adjustable splitter. New low rear bumper. All this creates a car that not only counters the aerodynamic lift at high speeds but creates downforce too. At 180km/h the downforce is 45N at the front, with the splitter at it's middle position, and 190N at the rear.
Ford did not have the space to build the Escort Cosworth, so the car was put together by Karmann in Germany. The production of the Escort Cosworth started on the 19th of February 1992.
The Escort RS Cosworth was Ford's new rallycar and was much more successful at it than it's earlier brothers; the Sierra Cosworth in two and four wheel drive versions. The total count of victories came to 8 in group A, and after the modifications that were made to the car to make it a WRC car, it scored two more victories.
In 1994, after the 2500 cars required for homologation were produced Ford put a "new", more civilized engine into the Escort Cosworth. The new engine is basically the same old engine in a new package. It has smaller turbo (Garrett T25) and another engine management system. This lead to more low-rew punch, but less boost available above 5500rpm. The new Escort RS Cosworth was produced until early in 1996 when EU put a new set of noise regulations for cars to work, and the Escort Cosworth couldn't pass those without modifications. For some reason Ford then decided to stop the production instead of changing the car so it would be within the new noise regulations. And that was the end to the Escort RS Cosworth. The last car rolled out of the factory on the 12th of January 1996. Then 7.145 Escort Cosworths had been produced.

Why so many knickers twisting? It's just a simple drag race on a magazine website. Not sure why it's turned into a post about how fantastic the Escos is.

yea, and if they'd turned up in a 1000bhp drag spec skyline, it'll have blitzed the lot

I'd have a mk1 focus over the mk2 anyday. less chavvy looking for one thing! (but abviously an escos over the both of them )

No one likes people picking holes in their child hood hero's I guess.

Just wondering if lots of FRS Mk2 owners are now doing the same now that Auto car has compared the FRS MK2 to the new VW Scirocco R.

http://www.autocar.co.uk/VideosWallp...AR=244624&CT=V

After watching this review it doesn't make me want the VW instead of the Ford (if I was in the market for a new car) but just goes to show that people buy a car with their heart not their Head
