Default License plate in front window/placement?

I got pulled over last night and given a £60 fine because the characters on my license plate are 2cm too small, there 6cm and should be 8cm apparently.

So I went to Halfords today and got a new license plate made up and need to find somewhere to fit it on my car.

Is it legal to have the number plate displayed behind the front window?

I can't find anything saying it cannot behind glass or must be fixed to the front bumper.

This is how mine was, when I got pulled over..

Yeah, apparently they're really cracking down on cars at the moment.

I live in a smallish town too, so I've got to change it really as I'm likely to get spotted again.

Don't tell me that! I've just trimmed the new plate, hoping to make it small enough to fit. I didn't know you had to leave 10mm around the edge.

just paint a white strip around the outside

you'd never guess i'd be reported by a plastic plod for not having a plate in the front of the car but rather in the screen

and yes, £60 fine every time

just leave your fog lights on instead, you'll only get told off about them

So does the law state the license plate must be on the front bumper?

Alot of people have told me they have never been pulled over for having it in the front screen, the only info I can find says it must be on the front of the car.
