how many blokes actually know about or buy wine ????
missus sent me out on another fooking mission as i wanted a few more beers
anyway she says get her some wine
just realised shes always there or she buys it when shopping
in went in to the off licence and collect me stellas and then ask for white wine
3 fooking walls of the stuff , what the fook do ya buy
i know fook all about it, though there would be 5 bottles of the stuff, some red some white
anyone else as think as me , spirits and beers i know about wine i cant drink as it tastes nasty , never learned about it
in the end i bought a first bottle of chardonay as i remember the word relates to wine
how are ya ment to buy the stuff when it all looks the same
maybe a wine guide should be a law
am i the only stupid uneducated one or are there others
i cant be the only one

20K+ Super Poster.
ok 6 kinds (i think)
red/white
still/sparking
sweet/dry
one you know you want for example a sweet white wine then you judge the quality by howmuch the botle costs a 2.99 bottle will taste like "normal" wine, a 6.99 bottle will taste like "posh" wine. anything costing more than about Ł10 per bottle, ignore it... on Ł per %vol its just not worth it... might aswell get some white lighting

Chardonnay is almost a dead cert, but it must be UNOAKED (or a headache will be almost a certainty).
It's flavour appeals to most White Wine Drinkers.
Alternatively a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
LOL, for a non-drinker, I almost sound like I know what I am talking about.

depends where you buying from. i really dont see the point in buying bottles over 10quid from your local off-license as they are normally crap. buying from specialised wine dealers is a different matter but if you are a customer to one of these then it notmally means you half way to alcoholism!
i only normally drink red wine so dont know much about white - normally as a rule if you stick to french wines then you cant go far wrong!
and with white wine ive found the more you drink the better it becomes!

Excellent
I'm off to the pub, see if I can make life interesting in there again (last night's disarming techniques demonstrated on passing members of the public descended into a blatent brawl after twenty minutes )

For women, the most popular I've found is something quite fruity - never go too dry on white..........
Blossom Hill/Jacobs Creek etc - very easy bottle to drink.
Red - well I live on the stuff - just got in from the pub, and the bottle of Isla Negra is well and truly being drunk!
Don't get me wriong - I love a pint, but wine is sooo drinkable!
By the way, I'm fooked

awww, ginge... here's what I know...
Right, chardonnay, merlot, sauvignon, etc... are all different kinds of grapes, so a sauvignon wine from australia and one from france are basically made from the same grape variety.
Each of these varieties have their own distinctive tastes, flavours, etc...
Next, the soil has a big part to play, the same grape variety grown in two different soils will result in a different tasting wine.
Third, wheather conditions throughout the year will affect the quality of the grape and hence the wine it is made from.
Fourth, some wines are left to mature naturally, that is the grape sugars and stuff that's on the skin is responsible for the fermenting in a natural process, resulting in a wine that tastes different every year. Hence why there are good and bad years for wine.
Other wine producers on the other hand clean the grapes to death, then add their own mixture of sugars and additives to create a similar taste year on year.
So, you have a great big mess in front of you cos' there are too many variables, but, if you try different wines over time, making a note of where they are from (e.g. who actually made it, not just the country it comes from), what kind of grape it is made from (sometimes it's a blend of different ones), and how it tasted like, etc... then you stand a pretty good chance of being able to pick a wine that's to your liking next time you need it.
Hope this helps.
PS: Jim Galbally forgot "rose" in his list. Usually very nice cold - drinks easily.
Biggest myth ever: White wine for white meat, red wine for red meat - bollocks.

Yep, love my wine. Girlfriends parents own a vineyard over here so drink far too much of it! Any advice you need, I will see what I can do and if I am no use, I know a man who is!
