Default impersonating a police officer? what's the deal here?

the short version of events here:
went to fill up in tesco yesterday morning
while filling up, some fella walks over and starts looking at the car
"you do know your front number plate is illegal don't you?"
"how do you mean?"
"no front number plate is an offence"
"it's in the windscreen, as you can see, the bumper is freshly new and it's still got bits missing from it, so for the mean time the plate is nclear view in the windscreen"
"is this your car?"
"yes"
"got any documentation on you?"
"why do you ask? the car is legit, it's not as if i'm going to do a drive off is it if that's what you are worried about"
"i'm a policeman" and with that, he's whipped some sort of id out of his pocket, flashed it at me and the put it away again "you need to write down your details and i'm reporting you and you'll have to pay a fine"
and then he hands me a bit of paper form the till to jot my details down on
"no official bit of paper then to write the stuff down on?"
"just write your details down on there, name address and postcode"
"so you aren't going to give me anything official in any way shape or form, just want to have my details?"
after all this has occurred and i'm feeling just a little pissed off, i go to pay for the fuel
and this cheeky fooker is sitting in the cubical
"i didn't think you were allowed to have 2 jobs"
"i can have 3 jobs if i want "

so, what's the crack?

anyway, as soon as i get a decent reply, i'm off to the cop shop to report him, and if i don't get a decent reply, i'm reporting him anyway

shouldn't he have announced himself as an officer in the first place?
no official paperwork? how does that sound?
unwilling to give me his number, thought they were supposed to?
flashing so id without letting me have a second look at it?
second job?
no tesco id either
can off duty coppers do this sort of thing?
etc
etc

A couple of possibilities,
it could be he was a Special, ie. has another job but volunteers part time.
Possibly he is on the other side of the law and would quite like to know where your car is parked to steal it.
Or..and most likely for me, a wannabe.

The response of Foxtrot Oscar would have been appropriate!

or just a do good wanker that thinks he had one over on you, I would have refused and point blank told him to fuck off for details or just took the piece of paper and wrote piss off or something on it. police officer has to by law give you his collar number if you ask for it, no number then there not a copper

Just what I was thinking, I know a "special" who always says he is a copper... full of shit.

I would have asked to see his badge again.

I'd report the bugger TBH

An officer is never off duty.

You were committing an offence with your number plate, but that is besides the point.

This is something the Police should take VERY seriously.

Let us know how you get on

I am amused that a 'police officer' is asking you for your details.

If said 'police officer' wanted your details that badly then he'd have a way of getting them without even asking you, so you should have just said you look forward to hearing from him.

I think coppers have to show you a warrant card if you ask to see it. Also as far as I know off duty coppers can still do you.

Did you see that program on ITV last night (you've been framed thing with a different name) some guy had to remove a scarecrow dressed as a copper with a speed gun sat on top of his hedge as it was impersonating a police officer and they weren't impressed. Report him anyway and get back to us.

scam! did you give him your details?
I'd have phoned a real copper in front of him on my mobile, your numberplate is fine in the front window, as long as its visable.

Get the twat reported!

I had a bloke cut me up last week then slam his brakes on, then drive at 40 in a 60 dabbing his brakes all the way. I overtook him, he got at the side of me at a roundabout and flashed a badge...when I asked him to pull over so I could have a look at it he waited for me to pull in to a layby then shot off...there are some really sad people out there

There was a row outside work a few weeks ago, an off duty copper cut through the bus lane outside work nearly twatting one of the sales managers who was turning in (legally btw)...in the coppers mind he was OK to do something the rest of us get points for and the other bloke was in the wrong. He even threatened to report the manager for his attitude

It's not actually, I got fined for it a few years ago. I was driving to a bodyshop to get my front bumper painted so it was all stripped down...trims, plates and everything with the plate in the windscreen. I got pulled yards away from the bodyshop and the twat still did me for it

Depends on the copper in most cases, most aren't bothered but you get the odd one that seems to take it personally

By law your number plate has to be visible and on the front of the vehicle. The windscreen is not the front.

been a bit busy but i shall be taking a trip to the police station to report it as soon as i can
as for him not being "off duty", he was working the till at a tesco's petrol station, so which "job" was he doing?

the plate was clearly visable, i just don't have the correct screws to attach it to the bumper, the layout of the plate, even though it is perfectly legal, means that i need a white capped screw to do in one place and a black capped screw in another, otherwise it looks a bit funny and i'd rather not be done for that, a point which i explained to an officer who pulled me up on friday afternoon and gave me the all clear about

Regards him not being off duty, if an officer was not on shift and saw something happen, but he negated to do anything about it then he would be in bother. If an officer has his warrent card on him, he must do what he should do.

I seriously doubt an officer would be working at tescos as a second job. Days officers don't work on shift are calledrest days. Normally are often warned to come to court to give evidence on these days. A job at tescos would heavily interfere with this duty.

Plus pay at tescos is wank, three days at tescos would earn as much as one days overtime in the police station I imagine.

Your plate must be vertical 100% on the front. Putting it in the window will be at an angle

The plate does NOT have to be 100% vertical, the law states as close to vertical as practical.
Coppers have to get permission to do a second job, don't know about PCSO, Plastic Cop Specially Ordered, may not.
They do indeed have to show ANYONE with reasonable grounds for requiring it their warrant card, they also have to tell you their number and what station they are based at.
Might just have been yet another power tripper copper, maybe a probationer, as a lot are like this to start with.

mate of mine gets a producer of the north wales bizzies for no rear seat belts ( in a 1979 car that doesn't legally need them )

the bizzies are threatening to seize the car so my mate is getting worried that his ride is going without him.
Anyway i went with them to the cop shop with dvla evidence showing that a 1979 car is pre legislation and it don't apply, the copper wouldn't read it and started being shitty and i was there watching taking it all in .
my mate then recognises the copper as a security guard from shows he does and this "copper" is a special with a regular standing over him.
anyway its all sorted and thats that, roll on 1 year later and my mates at a show and see's one of the security guards and says wheres the wanna be coppa and then finds out this he has been chucked out and on bail for grooming a underage girl on the internet

fooking result, lets hope he gets a right good kicking the twat.
