Default Lake District - Best walking area & place to stay?

Anyone on here live in the Lakes area? Or walk there much?

I've got a friend over next week (Mon Tues Weds) and we're going walking up in the Lakes somewhere.

Where's best to stay? Pub / B&B or decent quality bunkhouse places all ok options - but if it is a bunkhouse it needs to be decent as I've stayed in some proper shitty ones

Camped at Wasdale Head in deep snow once too, that was fun

Also where's the best area to walk? I've been a couple times, Scafell Pike, High Street and Helvellyn etc, might do the same areas again, but open to any suggestions

Let's have your thoughts please

Si

Anywhere in the Keswick area! you got the Windlater Forest to the west of Keswick, Skidorw to the north and Castlerigg to the east, all good place to walk and bike

+1

Done a few training weekends up that area and hit skiddaw and castlerigg in one day, was a killer.
Castlerigg hall is nice for camping.

I've heard good things about keswick, although i've never been.

Last time i went to the lakes, we stayed at ullswater (parkfoot). There was a bar and club house nearby to have a little drinky.

Old Dungeon Ghyll hotel - nice place to stay (excellent breakfasts) and busy pub in the evening. Great location for some serious walks (Scafell, Langdale pikes etc) or some ambling along the valley sides etc.

My sister has a B&B in Windermere. Very central location for trips out during the day and plenty to do in the evening.

Website - http://www.lingmoor-guesthouse.co.uk/

My sister and her parner are very keen walkers and will be able to advise you on many walks within the area. They will also make you up a packed lunch to take with you!

Give them a call, im sure they will be able to accomadate you, tell them Chris has put you in contact

Take PLENTY of cash if you stay there, the bar is mega expensive!

There's a nice national trust campsite within walking distance if you famcy that.

Also the pub next door is far more reasonable

have a good trip, I love the lakes

Thank you every one for the responses. Going to get myself on Google and look up all the places you have mentioned

Markk's suggestion sounds like a winner, 3 pubs close by

Much appreciated

Are you sure you're not getting the Old Dungeon Ghyll and the New Dungeon Ghyll mixed up?

Good choice, and you should catch the back end of some good weather too. We have been here ten days and are leaving today.

Take a trip to Ravenglass aswell and jump on the "Ratty" narrow gauge railway and this will take you up into some stunning countryside scenery with loads of cracking good places to walk for some stunning views of the cumbrian coast! Also there are some cracking pubs up there too - "The Ratty Arms" in Ravensglass is great for food and drink, just don't take Gordon too seriously (the Landlord) as he is one dry fucker to say the least

That he is! I ordered a prawn salad and he told me to "get out of my pub ya' big poof"! Took me a few seconds to realise he was pulling my leg! Out of embarrassment I changed my order to a bacon burger and fries!

I have stayed here before when it was operated by the Hilton. I believe they sold it off. Was nice enough, and not expensive. It is a bit remote from the centre though.

where do you fancy staying as i live on the west coast of the lake district and lived in eskdale all my life thats situated right on the Lal Ratty Railway, if you want somewhere nice and quiet with pubs in plenty of walking distant try Forest How Guest House in Eskdale also has good parking right out of the way
