How do you carry out a compression test?
Morning all.
Got problems with my Mk4 Escort XR3I EFI CVH Escort and will start with a compression test but never done one before.
Have got hold of a gauge, what is the best way to carry this out?
What sort of readings should I be getting for good condition std CVH 1.6i?
Have looked in Haynes manual but cannot find information-probably there but cannot see it!
Thanks, appreciate any help you can give.

The compression tester screws into the hole where the spark plugs go.
You would remove the plug leads, then unscrew one plug at a time and replace it with the compression tester, crank the engine over for a few seconds until a pressure is registered on the gauge, thats about it really.
Readings will vary depending how good the engine is but on an old cvh i'd be expecting around 160-180psi

Don't forget you need to have the throttle pedal on the floor when cranking it over aswell- look for an even reading accross the four cylinders- i would think around 180psi would be about right but not sure.

I would remove all the plugs first, gives the starter an easier time that way.
Look for around 165 -180, and no more than about 10% deviation across all four.
