my first legal car is a 1.6 m plate mondeo insurance with 0 no claims bonus was £720(i'm still using it now 18 months on and the insurance is now £400), . Admitedly it's a heap but hey, it gets me from A to B and it's still working - i've tried killing it and it just won't bloody die !!

I also read in the news a few years ago that a millionaire bloke bought his son a ferrari 360 as his first car but he couldn't get insurance for his son on it. Anywhere.
So money cant buy you everything until your old enough !!!

one of these 106 rallye series 2
cannot recommend one enough cornering is fantastic and with the 103 bhp and light weight they can be pedalled nicely for a first car!!

The ladies love it French
My first car was a brand new Corsa back in 2000, got it on the never never, but the 2yrs free insurance was a god send, the vauxhall insurance scheme also doubled your 2yrs no claims bonus once the free insurance period was up if you re-insured with them, so after 2yrs, I had '4yrs' no claims bonus, and bought myself a Punto GT which was like a rocket in comparison to a 1.2 Corsa

it's simple really, small engine, 1.0 or very close and not more than ten years old, do pass plus, insurance companies love it, you'll make more than your money back in the first year and more in the second
don't be tempted to get an old car, insurance companies don't like it, modern and safer is much cheaper to insure.

My first car at 17 was a 1.1 rover kensington (Metro) as they were formally known, cost 1200 squids to insure n that was 10 years ago, within 2 years and some no claims on the go had my escort rs turbo on the drive,
