First car, if you are young and don't have any money just drive the cheapest possible car until you have a few years NCB - then you can go out and get something proper.

This is the shite stage of driving, you want all these things, but the insurance companies will feel your arse if you even add a different air freshener... try stick to something with a tiny engine and do some subtle mods.
If I was 17 again, I'd probably buy a VW Lupo (think they're about Group 2 insurance), smooth it, deck it and throw some nice wheels on it.
Cheers,
Grant

Best way to get it cheaper is to get something abit older, like L or M reg etc.
Theres no way you can have a nice car and looking how you want it and STILL have respectable insurance costs.
Also declare any mods you have, and i mean everything, it shouldnt cost much more as you'd think(if any) and in the event of a accident you wont be shafted because you failed to mention something so petty such as alloys. If they can find a way of not paying out they will, checking your mods is an quick way out for them, dont get caught

sorry mate but that is the funniest thing I have heard for a long time. Just because you have a low powered car doesn't mean you are going to be late for things, all small cars will do 70mph ya know

Fella, I would say the 1.25 fez will be quicker than the 1.3. It is 16v so will drive better and sound nicer unlike the 1.3 bag of nails sounding engine.
Next us is to call around, and use comparision sites to get the policy down. If the car is cheap, look at 3rd party fire and theft and try it with your old man or old lady as a named driver as this can oddly reduce the price of the policy even though you are the main driver.
If you can't afford mods (not really worth engine mods tbh on that car) then imo buy the cleanest car you can get in a good colour, then get some fiesta zetec s alloys on it.
De badge the car and keep it clean, maybe stick some recaro front seats in it and a decent stereo and run it for a year.

1.25 Fiesta is a sound choice as they are cheap. As you've found out though th einsurance is a killer and in the first year you're pretty stuffed. I would honestly look at getting any small engined cheap car to cut your teeth on and not mod it at all.
Chances are you will knock/scrape it in your first year and you'll be miffed if you do it to a car you care about.
Do NOT fail to disclose mods as if you think the quotes you're getting now are bad try and get one once you've had a policy nullified by failing to disclose things.
Pass Plus can bring a drop in premium, it did for my brother but that was a good few years ago now

yes, you could look to something oldskool and make it euro clean, mk3/4 escort or mk1/2 fiesta.
Would still stick with the mk4 fez tbh as an alrounder, my misses had one that we gave to her old lady and it's done 110k and never fails.

was gonna say cars younger than 10 yrs old are cheaper to insure as parts are still easy to buy if it gets binned etc. have you not tried asking your parents to insure it for you in there name and you as a named driver i no its frowned on but f@#'k it your on the road cheaper. i remember paying 1700 at 17 for my mk1 golf gti and before you lot start it was free and was replaced by my shinney red xr2i

get a 1993 fiesta 1.8 diesle, cheap to run and cheap to insure and even though its small it has a manly feel to it because of the beast of an engine lol, infact when i got mine it was cheaper to insure than a 1992 1.1 petrol fiesta

I do like the way people are saying you'll probably just crash it anyway. I never crashed my first car Only a couple of friends did. We aren't all the same.
I had a modified car too, and my insurance wasn't too extreme. Adding XR/RS kits isn't that bad. You only have to tell them it's a bodykit, not that it's an RS replica.
MK4 Fez won't be too bad, but, insurance is just madness now, whatever you buy. You just have to put up with it and build up your NCD sadly

Rightly or wrongly, it's nigh-on impossible to prove though.
If a car is insured with the main driver as someone's parent, and is also insured for the kid to drive, then BOTH of those people are insured to drive it, and therefore fully entitled to drive it on the road.
If the kid were to have an accident, they're still fully entitled to make a claim. Even if the kid drove that car all the time, and the parent never did, how can that be proven?
Even if the the parent drove car for 5000 miles per year, and the kid drove it for 2000 miles in the same year (which would be deemed perfectly acceptable in the eyes of the insurance company if the car was insured as such), I bet the kid would be statistically more likely to have an accident.

As long as it isn't proven, it's allowed

But if you were to go out and commit those crimes, you would stand a 99% chance of getting caught.
The chances of being caught for insurance fraud (in the above context) are about 0%

That's insurance fraud...

If you were to do that and not get caught, then no one here would be any wiser. For all I know, you may have done the above already.

insurance fraud is peoples own choice and risk but where i get angry when wankers commit insurance fraud as when these fraudsters have accidents etc it all results in our premium increse. not big and not clever, and if some tit twatted my car and his insurance was invalid i would be quike likely to make him shit his own teeth out

The way i got mine down when i started driving was to bullshit the "previous quote"
I was getting £3000 and £4000 quotes on my 1.4 escort van, with alloy wheels and not alot else! sunstrip, wanker lights and other halfords stick on items
so i told one guy i'd had a quote of £980 and i thought it was alot of money. The guy down the phone nearly choked i remember it well he advised i should take as its a very good quote but he then came back with a quote of £1600. which i accepted. beacuse he wanted my custom i got extras thrown in too, breakdown, european cover and a fastrack no claims, in 10 months i got a years ncb.
