Default MR2 Turbos.... Any good? How much are they worth?

A lad at work has offered me his MR2 Turbo on a K plate for £800, it's red and has no T&T and needs a bit of work... Bodywork and interior are pretty tidy, I'm just wondering if it is worth buying or not, maybe to keep as a daily runner or just as a bit of a project to do up and sell?

as a financial investment it would be a bad idea as theyre not worth much. also theyre totally impractical as a daily runner, 2 seats remember. plus theyre not the most comfortable things on the planet.

Slight misfire and a boost leak apparently, and the idle is erratic, and prob a new battery. It has been sat since march so just a tidy and unseize etc I recon... Might be cheeky and offer him £550/600

i have an mr2 and tbh its an awesome car.

best thing for it is offer £500 and see what he says. Cant really go wrong and it will be a service for the idle more than likely.

Jim Galbally what rev is your mr2 and colour etc ?

tomm, check the prices on pistonheads before saying you'd whip it up at 800 they have gone down in value a LOT in the past year.

mine's a rev2 in black, it's also for sale if someone waves some money under my nose

£800 For a turbo is very cheap. don't see them them often for under 2k. As long as its easy bits to sort then snap it up as you will make double back once it has t&t. Id say go for it.

I'd try and find out a bit more about whats going to need doing because they are awkward to work on, certain parts have to come from Toyota and not always the cheapest.
Is it a uk car or jap? Tbar and full leather?
However, definately worth it (well, in my opinion) and fun to drive. When the back end goes though-its bloody gone!
Mine is a non-turbo but i use it as my daily driver. Comfortable and really easy to drive long distance too.

K3nnyF- gearbox synchros are a really common problem, mines sometimes a pain to drop into 2nd. Have you had yours repaired? Im suprised you've got that problem already!

Surley on a daily its only an issue if your a taxi driver?

Good fun car.

If its a mk1, that was a pretty coolcar, Id say if it was tidy youd at least get your money back on sale

The mk2 the round ugly one id probably avoid, especially if its £800. (why do people put 355 bodykits on them )

One of my mates has had I think every version going, he cant fault them.
Hes just sold his mk3 02 plate turbo (think it had around 250bhp? cant remember) nice smart car, and relativly cheap.

Only issue is the hairdresser image. But if your simply buying it for cheap fun etc then an ok car.

Perhaps he means one like this?

http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evoc...oyota_mr2.html

They did the TTE kits and some people have then gone on to get well over 200bhp out of their cars

Yeah, thats the mk3 roadster. Dont like them. mk1's are cool little cars but I wouldnt have one because I like the mk2 shape (hence why i bought one!).

Not many people actually put 355 kits on them. But there are kits now for the mk3 aswell anyway, a Gallardo is one of them.

Hairdresser image? nah, thats the celica and mx5's!!

K3nnyF- good idea, cheaper to get a recon gearbox anyway isnt it?? Yours is a turbo then yeah?

yeah a rev 4 turbo. Awesome machine and its uber clean for its age. Im still however tempted to buy another one but a N/A and use it as a daily driver instead of the tubby

anyone who says a 2 seater is practical as an everyday car clearly hasn't got 2 mates its very awkward for me from a social aspect only having 1 passenger seat

anyway as before, you can pick up a runner for 1k on pistonheads and thats before any bartering, 800quid is not as cheap as you'd think.

i would have seriously considered letting mine go for 1k, thats how worthless they are nowadays

also guys if its an MR2 turbo then its a mk2 and its a jap or US import. those are the only turbo versions ever made. 99% of the ones in the UK are RHD japs ones as not many people were thick enough to import the LHD US one

The Mk3 shape handle fantastically well, I took one out on test at millbrook and silverstone as I was working for Toyota GB at the time, but they have nowhere near enough power to be real fun and the SMT ones are hateful things on a track!

Very nice cars to drive, and like every one else has said the engine is a pig to work on, i had a K reg t-bar for every day use and it was such a joy to drive, if i had the chance i would love to buy another one

I dont know where the hairdresser image came from, i have hardly ever seen a MR2 being drivin by a lady, and i have never knowen a hairdresser to own one, most hairdressers now a days i see drive mini's.
