Turbo'd bikes
I sometimes come across turbo'd bikes on bikerforums (ashamed to admit I visit these but I guess it's a bit like being an onlooker at the scene of an accident: you don't really want to see it but you just can't help but watch) and they tend to be Hayabusa's, Fireblades, GSX-R's and the like....
Now I was thinking IF I'd turbo a bike I think I'd use a Honda Goldwing, the GL1800 would be ace! Heavy and long enough not having to worry about it summersalting off into the nearest hedge, stable enough at speed and wide enough rear to put the power down.
Apart from that you could actually twinturbo it since it is a flat six!!! Loads of room as well and as far as I know three pots per turbo is ideal with the way the exhaust gasses pulsate or something of the sort? The extra capacity over a 1000 or 1300 cc bike is a premium.
What says you?

Superstoker: Who gives a shit about what a turbo'd bike pitted against it's original counterpart on a track would do???
I think you'll find there are some very very rideable turbobikes out there that will EAT a standard bike on a track. But ofcourse, there are complete pigs as well.
With regards to the backwheel-thing: this was one of the reasons I suggested the long wheelbased 400 kg goldwing....

Hmmm, surely the point of turbo'ing a bike is to make it even faster.
Why start with wallowing cruiser bike weighing twice as much?
I think that the ppl that build these turbo bikes would want them to go round corners too.
Honda Goldwing 1800cc:
Kerb weight: 405kg.
Honda Fireblade 1000cc
Kerb weight: 199kg.

Most turbo bikes are designed as drag bikes or top speed bikes.
Here is a thought why does ghost rider use a tuned gsxr 1000 over his 400bhp turbo busa? More power doesnt automatically mean a quicker bike

st170 breaking
i think it would be pointless too
even on a blade etc, my blade is fast enough as is, when i top end it i spose it could get there quicker but not much! (today i went past a zx10 he was doin about 130 and i came past him at a dialed 170 )
and mine is limited by its sprokets, if i wanted 190 i could get it
turbo a goldwing? nah, im sure it would be a laff for all of 20 mins and a trike version moreso but you'd still struggle to go round a corner as you do on em as std

Some of you are missing the point:
Ofcourse pretty much any sportsbike would be quicker through the twisties but that's just not the point!
It would be a nice conversion from an engineering point of vieuw and since it isn't the most obvious choice you can add bonuspoints for being different and therefor cool lol
Besides that I am willing to bet that it would SLAUGHTER most sportsbikes as long as the roads are straight and long as it would be far easier to keep the front down and to get the power down on a GL1800 than a sportsbike because the wheelbase is so much longer and the weight higher.
Just as making MKIII escort RWD and Cosworth is rather pointless, it's also rather cool because most people wouldn't expect it.
Apart from that I can only imagine that the midrange grunt must be enormous when overtaking on the motorway!
As for the comments regarding a N/A fireblade being not much slower to topspeed than a turbo'd version...oh dear...time for a reality check! It WILL be much quicker!
And although I know sportbikes in general are way quicker around corners I have seen some people on GL's and the likes that put many a sportsrider to shame!
EDIT: supersoaker why did you edit out your comments? Did you no longer stand by them or...?

I have always thought for a road conversion, a supercharger would be a much better option for a bike as it makes linear power, so would be a lot easier to ride than a turbo with a big boost spike!

i will get some pics of my mates bikes, something we have built over the last few years, old slab side gixxer, 1200cc, with a pukka T34 on dta management running 2.2 bar boost
he keeps trying to get me on it on the strip but its not my thing, but its very very fast, in the class he runs it in, the boost is limited to 1.6 bar, and runs 8s 1/4s at 170mph.
as for the turboing the wingding, you would still be a cunt on a wingding, even with a turbo

Turbo bikes make great road bikes. The extra torque is spot on.
On the track the less linear link between throttle movement and power at the wheel will probably make them to hard to ride 100% at say a good club racer level speeds.
I've never known a stock blade do 190 no matter what the gearing.
A good turbo bike will bring you third gear type aceleration in sixth gear and at silly speeds.

Kawasaki gpz turbo available.....as factory, i always thought there were proper cool.
Wouldn't mind building a hardtail chopper with a turbo hyabusa motor, none of this v twin shit for me.

Bikes as standard aren't as quick as people think, especially after 130+.
With a turbo they'd certainly be fun. A goldwing turbo would be like trying to make a range rover fast.

20K+ Super Poster.
There was also the CX650 turbo.
Ralph Hill has a bored and stroked katana with 1300+cc turbo'd and nitrous.
He's only ridden it twice in the time since he did it as he admits it scares the shit out of him, he's also never dared squirt the nitrous on the road.
Saying that has he still go it, not sure, but know it was very comfortably in excess of 250bhp, before n2o.

Perhaps they do alright without turbo's:
(probably running 500+ cc)

And seeing as I have one - RG500 drag bike:

My god there aint half some bollocks been posted on this thread!
Turbo bikes are good for drag bikes and top speed and thats about it in my opinion. Yes they have more torque for overtaking etc. But who cares, n/a sports bikes are where its at. Turbo/supercharged bikes is all for pub talk, and in reality, you wont be able to ride it 'quick' out on the road. With bikes its not all about power, its all about how you use the power you have and get it down on the road. I certainly wouldne want to ride a turbo'd bike quick on anything other than a straight, but even then lets face it, theres not many roads where you can safely hold a bike at silly speed for more than a few seconds, so yes in my opinion as a road bike that you want to ride 'quick', its just pointless.

If the turbo is not too big and you keep the boost levels sensible it makes a very good road bike, mine made boost from 4000 to 11000 rpm.
The only time it was at all tricky to ride was on very slow 1st gear corners where it needed treating with respect.

Like i said, there good for high speed and drag bikes. If you want to ride 'quick' then get a decent m/a sportsbike. If you want to be different and sound good down the pub, then turbo your road bike to impress, thats fair enough.

My there is a lot of pish in this thread, one of my mates has a turbo charged 79 Z1000.He has owned it for about 18yrs Its monoshocked different wheels,an air shifter is fitted its bored out and a whole load of good stuff. He has owned plenty of faster bikes and he did build the bike mainly for going to the bulldog for timed runs,BUT it does get used as normal and is a prehistoric monster and does state its place in todays society and I love it so for me turbocharged bikes are ace !.

all you need is a bike set up for the strip. Strapped and lowered, adjustable swing arm and and a decent rear tyre like a schinko coupled with a good rider will acheive such times and mph just like Andy has done with the bike I've mentioned.
