rs 500 number zero
i spoke to a guy today who said his dad has rs500 no.zero that was given to him as a retirement gift out of ford[daventry],i dont know what colour [forgot to ask ]but he said it has less than 10,000 miles ,he was given it in 1986 before they were released .last offer he had for it was £69000 a few years ago .the guy seemed a really nice and knowledgeable chap and knew his stuff on cossies.just thought i would put it out there to see if there is anymore info on the car.

i was led to believe the first ever rs500 is unaccounted for, but all rs500's have a number stamped on the inlet maifold so you know which manifold belonged to what car
i'm led to believe the first ever rs500's inlet was found to be on another car so people have assumed that the first ever rs500 is in pieces
i could be completely wrong tho!

I love these old wifes tales , lol,
All 4 of the prototype rs500"s were part of the 500 build and all 4 cars are still up and running
I dont claim to know everything but saying that i have never heard or a number 0 rs500 , lol and i would put loads of money on it that it doesnt exist
Plus even if this bloke thought it was true , how the hell could he prove it as you cant claim to have something thats part of a limited build run and yet not have a number that falls within that build sequence ,
I have number 501 rs500 in my garage , sadly tho i have lost the build plaque , lol

i never heard of zero either paul and he said he got the car in 1986,maybe by zero he meant it was a prototype.im going to see if i can get a pic of it if i can ,but the guy seemed very genuine.
he said there was a thread of it on the rsoc site a few years ago, from which they were offered the £69000 for it
cheers james

The protos went through some serious testing and some were even damaged and repaired before they were sold on so i doubt there is another proto that wasnt part of the build .
Number 1 rs500 was owned by a friend of mine who sadly passed away not long ago and the car ( number 1 ) was sold by him to somone overseas
Shame realy that munber 1 isnt still in this country and even sader that Chris isnt still with us driving around in it

A certain self promoted rs500 guru pillock who is banned from most forums tried to convince people a few years back about the very existence of such a car , this is his sad attempt at doing so , love the photoshop ..
anyone who knows the reg sequence of the Prototypes when they were registered will understand this.

Ive always maintained that more than 500 3drs must have gone to Tickford, no way would Ford stockpile just exactly 500 cars, as the production line was stripped straight after. All that would be needed would be for a transporter to crash en route to conversion and the whole process would have been scuppered, no way would the product planners take that risk for no reason.
My theory and thats all it is, is that a good few unstamped 3drs were also sent as reserves, and this explains the number of e plate 3 doors around, as these would have been un required cars and remained as 3drs, and stamped as such then sold on afterwards through the dealer network. The main stock of 3drs were sold by March 87 so I doubt the e platers were all just late registered cars
May also explain the long running debate over the other issue, with the downies being swapped chassis ones, carried out during the run out of the 500 official cars
As to no 00 why ? same as the rumour of lhd factory versions, 4x4 factory version, odd colour cars etc they never ever actually surface do they, it was a fast track process to meet a homologation need, no time to be messing about with one offs.

if your theory is correct Paul then the 3 door i own now,an E plated one, would that not have a chassis number that would be one of the last,if they came unstamped, then they would of have to have been stamped at some time after the 3 doors were sold,i can get you the chassis number and if you wish just to see.

Im not saying each and every e plate 3dr was a potential 500 as no doubt some of the main batch were held back until August 1st registration but it could explain a few things.
Paul in your opinion do you believe exactly 500 and no more than this made the journey from Genk to Tickford for conversion, why would Ford take the risk for the sake of a few extra spares just in case.
Dave with both your latest 3drs being e platers you may hold the answer. If some of these theoretical "spare" 3drs were stamped by Ford/Tickford after the RS500 run was finished and then sold on as new cars, the answer would be in the VIN sequence as all the 3drs were built by the end of 1986. A VIN decode would say whether yours were late registration main batch cars as they would come up as 1986 assembled cars, or whether they are mid 1987 VINS so post 3dr production VIN codes.

Dave,
I had completely forgot about the e plate moonstone 3dr I had years ago, only crap on the tv, so I went hunting in the attic and found a copy of the old reg document.
I have no idea whether she was an up or down but tapped in the VIN and it comes back as a Nov 86 build so that may blow my theory out the water
Then did a check on one of my Dec 86 registered cars and it was a Oct 86 build, and another on a Feb 87 registered one and it was also an Oct 86 build
So then tried the first of the RS500s and it comes up as a Dec 86 build as does the last of the RS500s
Be interesting to see what your two e plates show
this is the site I used to decode the VIN
