How big are the pics? There's 1024mb in 1gb, so you'll get around 1000 pics at 1mb a pic.

Higher resolution generally takes more space on the card

You can have a small jpeg, and a large jpeg, and a large raw and a massive raw, so it's ultimately file size that counts
