Default draw though turboing with a carb

has anyone on here ever done this? i know a lot of people say dont bother and convert to efi but from what i've read so far (david vizards book) it worked very well before injection was common

i know turbo technics (may have possibly been janspeed) did a draw through kit for the essex too

i'm going to have a go at it anyway i as just wondering if anyone has any experience with it

yeah but they blew ther boost through the carb, they didnt suck the air fuel mixture from the carb then boost it into the engine

this is basically what i mean

Did it on a moggy minor for a laugh, amazed how well it worked tbh, and there are several advantages to it this way as well, better atomised mixture being one of them.

did you use a turbo with a carbon seal? apparently when you let off the vaccume sucks oil into the inlet but i think i've found a way around this, take the butterflys out of the carb and mount a throttle body between the turbo and inlet and link the throttle spindle on the carb to it using a link rod

you can also use dcoe carbs designated with a "t" after the serial no

these were specifically designed to be for turbo blow through application
have 2 of them here but they are very hard to come by and rare

the reason i was thinking suck through is because i dont need to mess around with different fuel pumps and regulators, to do a suck through system i literally have evry part i need (basically a turbo and some steel lol) just a case of knocking a manifold up and some piping

you will still need to use a fuel pressure regulator too ... renault 5 gt turbo use these and for simplicity they are good and easy to sort but do have there limitations !!

i won't, the carb will be working the same as it normally does because its on the front of the turbo and getting the sucked through it like normal instead of blown through it, i'll be using the mechanical pump too

i really cant find much info about doing this at all on the net, i've been talking to a chap i know who was a tester at garrett for like 20 years before thair skem plant closed, he said it works well and that when the montego turbo was in development they used the suck through carb method

this sounds quite interesting and it makes a lot of sense. any reason it was the less popular method?

besides the vacuum messing with the turbo i cant see any real problems or complications. and the vacuum issue is pretty easy to work around!

The old renault 5 gordini turbo was draw through.

Personally if you're wanting to easy convert a non turbo I'd go for the blow through renault 5 turbo solex carb. Very easy to do a conversion with these. Decent fuel pump, renault rising rate FPR, solex turbo carb (obviously re-jetted)

I've got a solex turbo carb in my garage from where I was going to sleeper a mk3 escort a couple of years back.

Seen this conversion done many times on cvh's and pinto's and it's very effective for little money.

Right here's some real info, suck through is easy as you don't need to change fuel reg from an ordinary carb, shouldn't need any new seals as they're not under pressure, better atomisation than blow through.
Basically brilliant, however keeping act's down can be more difficult as fuel will stick to the sides of a cooler or pipework and run out of tune, so a small cooler if any.
Also throttle response will be a little slow.
Go for it though, will be a hoot.
