i know a guy thats a spark same as myself, hes rough as fuk,i mean really rough, someone youd never want in your house

he now owns his own company, has done for a few years and doing very well,he has 4 sparks working for him, probably all good guys,do good jobs

so would you trust the company knowing the boss is dodgy as

Attention to detail is great but making a living from running a business doing cars is a challenge as I am discovering. It can be done but I think the main skills your mate needs are discpline, organisation, focus and an understanding of cashflow and how it can break your business.

There's no point in being able to do an Escort Cosworth to that standard if he can't make a living doing it. In cashflow terms a resto job of that quality could kill a small business.

Charlie i agree with what your saying but as i stated before full resto's are what can also been done at his garage as there would be mini resto's,mot's,rebuilds, electrical problems solving, body work repairs etc etc Mark runs a garage for someone so iam sure he is aware what wages would be exspected and running costs of a garage iam just asking if this would be a good service and people would use it?

I would say there is a gap in the market for a good RS specialist to do small restos upto 2,3 k etc and who can do mechanical repairs , but full blown resto"s no

When we done mine paul it was about the same but we replaced loads of stuff along with a full shoot on the outside total bill 11k all in.... i was adding it up as i went with the floor and all the bits to go with underside resto alone was about 6k.... it all depends what your going for, i had to buy everything for this resto

Put my saff in for engine rebuild, couldnt and wouldnt qoute me even roughly in figures, was in there for nearly 2 months iirc, nothing done bar people nose about the car while sat there, ended up with a few marks on paintwork and i even got a text from a random guy wanting to buy my rare RS accessorries steering wheel

I popped in to see what was happening occasionally as i covered that area in my works van and no progress.

I then asked for a quick engine change from a breakers, i was there when he phoned paul at NYRSS and he had nothing available so fair enough but there is others out there.

Phoned him and said i wont bother, i will collect the car at night, collected car and drove it home, Borrowed some space at mates workshop took engine out myself and did an exchange with petes rs specialists, put engine in back of my 405 workhorse and drove to petes, swapped engines plus a bit of cash, quick natter, wash hands and drove home, me and mate fitted engine new clutch, newknock sensor after i dropped old one and it broke (exspensive drop ) had car back up and running within the week and was sweet.

But having heard and read others about him no wonder he does run of the mill stuff now and you get a bad name for a reason as far as im concerned.

so you take home 70k a month! - why would you stop that and work for yourself as IMO there is no way you are going to make 70k a month straight off.

I actually find that very hard to believe also - you must be the highest paid mechanic in the world

Id say go for it !!!!!!!!!!

Where else can you go with your old Ford who has the ability, resources and most importantly the time and patience to carry out basically anything and everything that you'd ever want done to your car ???

I can see what you're saying about people not having big money to do full on resto's but then, as with every resto / fabrication etc type job, surely you could book the car in to get a certain amount of work done as and when you can afford it ? After all, not many people can set off with 10, 20, 30, 40 grand in their pocket to end up with their dream Cosworth from day 1 can they ???

Craig I'm sure your mate will do well, though my serious thoughts are... A: Is Scotland the place he's planning on doing it, and/or is this the place to be doing it? B: Is it going to be marketed as an "RS Specialist" garage, adverts in Fast Ford etc? and of course C: Real resto work is done cash-in-hand and that's the way it should be!
