Default Tom Tom V Garmin

All, need to get a Sat Nav but unsure wether to get the following Tom Tom:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165685

Or this Garmin:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165685

Now the guy in the shop was raving that Garmin is better, but im always suspicious as they may need to hit sales targets on Garmins etc So in you opinions what is better? I have never used a Garmin before so im more incline to go Tom Tom. Opinions wanted how they compare etc.

I've had both in the past and the TomTom is in a totally different league. Using the GO 740 Live at the minute, and it's superb. Totally idiot-proof as well.

Good info Mike, i had a Tom Tom previous and tbh i thought it was great. But they guy in the shop was raving about the Garmin etc.

At the moment unless many people say different on here i will go Tom Tom, as its better you know.

The Garmin's not bad, and wouldn't advise against it if it was on a silly cheap offer, but if you're able to buy either one over the other, it's a no brainer!

IMHO whats wrong with a map

been used for thousands of years,
no theiving scum is going to break in to your car to steal it,
It doesnt require any power,
It wont spazz out on you
It wont sent you up the wrong road
It wont make you drive like a twat pulling up suddently and turning in with out indicating or any consideration for any other road user.
It cost what £1.99-2.99 from a service station
Wont make you look like a geek with a load of suction pads stuck to the screen (especially if you also have a hands free prehistoric dinosaur tooth on you ear, sorry bluefin)

I can not think once where I have needed to rely on satnav. even remote corners of the country, ive had no trouble finding just with common sence and looking at a map before I set off.

So my advise dont buy either save your money and spend it on something worth while.

Lee its for my Mother really as she wants it to go on few trips, so its a must! And tbh for the price now, the hassel they take away from thumbing through a map is more than worth it!

I can ready a map, and always foudn the last 2 miles of a journey the most difficult. The stress sat nav takes away when your rushing pays for itself imo.

I use Garmin software in my phone and it does the job perfectly well. I'd say it is on a par with the Navteq system that was in my Vectra, or the MB Comand system (in fact, it's better than that in some ways!)

Never had or tried a TomTom though.

Guy in my office has just got a TomTom UK, the new IQ version. He's says its brilliant. He had to go through loads of couintry lanes to get to a place. Would have never found it if using a map or road signs.

When you say sat-nav, the first thing that comes to mind is a TomTom.

Tho, some call it twat-nav instead.

Personally i would recommend a navman, i've done a good few thousand miles over europe (france, germany, italy, beluigum, holland etc) and its been exellent! Wouldn't use anything else now. Its very simple to use, quick to load and it will also and loads up even whilst driving which many other makes can't do. I know you've listed two makes up the top but you should really consider a Navman.

yup, tried that, it's fine until you touch the screen, then it just switches off and when you restart it, it does the whole "wait 5 minutes while i think about what's happened" shit

of all the satnav units, the tomtom one is the easiest to use and, for my money, easiliy the best overall package on the market so i just wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions than the xl, which is all i need really

the only other thing which halfords have failed to tell me was that if i buy a new one, will i be able to carry over my camera subs from the broken one, seeing as i've literally just forked out for the update on sunday

My line of thought exactly until I had one for a day!

So much more on them like speed camera warnings, car parks, petrol stations etc. Great if you travel daily to un familiar places.

and daily updates which is handy as most city centre roads change over night

Everyone saying Tom Tom as it's the most commercial of the two?

Go into any Halfords and ask: they'll tell you Garmin is in a different league.

Look at how well marketed Tom Tom are: that is why they sell such large numbers. Does it mean they are the best though?

Up to you really but I'll stick with my Garmin. I've used both by the way.

I have also used both, and I'll stick with tomtom. The best sat nav etc etc is nonsense really, they both pretty much do exactly what they say on the tin, they both rely on the same satellites etc. Its just the user interfaces that are different. And in my opinion, and the opinion of the majority on here, the tomtom's is better.
