Default Taking apart a PS3? UPDATE!!

Has anyone ever taken apart their PS3 to clean / dedust? In short my PS3 has stopped reading any discs, i've been advised that it is either the laser(s) that are dirty or I need to replace the laser unit (part is a KES-400a). As its out of warranty (one of the first 60gb machines) i thought i'd try and strip it down to clean before shelling out money.

Has anyone tried this with success?

Chris

Probably a silly question, but I assume you have tried one of those discs that are lens cleaners? The ones with fluid are better

Dont touch it, mine was 16 months old when it went wrong and sony fixed it even tho it was out of warranty .

Email them and tell them your not happy with a Ł450 machine that lasted 5 mins,

scee_gb@mailuk.custhelp.com or call the PlayStation Careline on 08705 99 88 77 (National Rate),

I had this happen with my 60GB version but this was a few years ago, Sony replaced it no questions asked. My mates went wrong a few months back and Sony were not so helpful. Always worth giving them a call and if they wont do anything kick off a little and email a written complaint, they will more than likely sort it or at least offer you something.

I've taken the ps3 apart many times - my kids seem to think it can handle 3 dvd's at a time.
Look on youtube theres vids on how to do it.

blimey mixed opinions!!!!! I've looked on youtube etc and it seems to be a common with them.

Might email Sony and see if they come back to me (not overly confident!!). If they replace it with a refurbed unit it wont be a 60Gb machine with card readers etc will it? (been advised that they have none left?)

Its worth asking Sony to see if they will replace the unit and with what. Theres also a new ps3 coming in Sept (thinner, lighter & cheaper).

A mate exchanged his 2 year old PS3 with a brand new one from the shop he purchased it from. Apparently there is a European law that states a product must be in good working order for x time. He quoted this to the company and kicked off big time saying its a Ł300 machine and they exchanged the unit to keep the customer happy (Obviously he had proof of purchase).

I now pay for most things on a credit card and I keep all my statements as most companies will take this as proof of purchase.

Last I heard PS3 slim is being launched @ Ł249.99 and most places have already dropped prices on all other PS3 consoles to Ł249.99 + games, etc.

And last thing. Don't bother buying electrical goods from Argos as their 16 day money back guarantee does not apply and getting any form of refund from them can be very, very hard. Their head office are shyte as well and won't budge on this policy...

Cheers guys, my PS3 is about 3 years old now so dont think i can get away with a swapout. Within the first 12 months it had to be replaced which was no problem but unsure if Sony will honour it this time.

Give them a call mate. If you have the receipt try taking it back to the shop also.

EU rules give you 2 years to return electrical goods regardless of the warranty.

Read up a bit more and the EU rule isn't strictly true - However if a product has an inherent fault then it could well be covered. Ring up Sony Customer Services and see what they say about it BEFORE you open it up.

UPDATE - Spoke to Sony and they said they wouldnt fix / replace for free. They want Ł85+vat to pick it up, fix it and return within 14-21 days. They will also put a 3 month warranty on it. I asked the chap if I should give it a go cleaning it myself and although he did say he's not aloud to recommend it he said that that is all Sony will do most probably!!!!!

Hopefully if I can get it working i'll trade it in at Gamestation, they are giving Ł198 for a 60Gb machine if I exchange it for a new slimline one!!!!!!

Could you get round this by not filling the warrenty card when you buy the ps3,but fill it out when you get a problem send with it,then send it off and leave it a few weeks before you ring them?

They said this to my mate a few months back, so called them back up had a moan about customer service, loyal customer etc and they agreed to swap it. Might be worth giving it another shot.

Do it youself it's easy. Mine done the same thing, and Sony wasn't intersted in helping in the slightest. Go on ebay, get a new laser on there. I payed Ł40 delivered for a genuine replacement. Then fitted it myself. Touch wood, has been great ever since, and lasted longer than when I bought it new from the shops.

Might try that mate, i took it apart tonight to see if I could clean the laser etc (wasnt sure if it was dusty or something), wasnt too difficult to do.

There are different types of lasers arent there? My player has 400 AAA imprinted on it?
