Unhappy Beemer

My son spoke to me earlier today regarding problems with his 2.0 oil burner turbo bmw. As he was driving, he heard a loud pop, and the car lost most of its power. He says it will not exceed 40mph and is totally gutless. It is also throwing out clouds of black smoke. The obvious thought was that the turbo had let go, but surely the car should run at higher speeds with lack of acceleration, unless the ECU has the ability to limit the speed until the fault is cured. Any ideas?.

Clouds of black smoke indicates a rich mixture, or in other words its leaking air somewhere.

As James says, check for a split/loose hose, or the intercooler could possibly have let go.

Once you've got it fixed, he can lower his chances of it happening again by investing in a Mercedes xD

Are you on drugs?

I know soooo many people with new Mercedes, and they're at the dealers more than they're on the road.

Mercedes have to be THE worst built cars on the road

Lol, some models are more prone to rust like the W210 E55 but they don't fall apart

Mercedes Build Quality > BMW Build Quality > Ford Build Quality

If the fault isn't obvious then it could be worth taking the hoses off to check them properly, even the tiniest hole/split can cause the symptoms you have described!

This doesn't explain the smoke but I know they are prone to splitting the plastic inlet manifold, with a loud pop/crack when it happens.

erm it does explain the smoke...

less air with the same fuel = black smoke (unburnt fuel)
