Default how high should a tv be?

got the builders in knocking the chimneys out and stuff so i've got to run some new channeling for the wires which is why i need to know how high the telly needs to be for optimum viewing

it's a 50" and it WAS sitting at about 6'3" at the top, but te mrs felt this was a little too high

now there is the chance to reposition it i want to know how high it "should" be and how high "feels" right from experience

i've got them to put in some 3" guttering pipework to run 2 sets of cabling so that's not going to be a problem

think is though, i've got so much cabe it's unreal connecting stuff up, mainly to the sky box and onwards to the dvd recorder, the ps3, the hdmi switcher and the amp as well as the computer all running into it so wires galore, but it's going to be shite if the telly is at the wrong hieght

Mine is 1.25 metres off the floor and it ok some time to get used to it, I was forever getting a bad neck as I use my tv for the computer monitor.

Ideally I'd have it a bit lower but I'm not taking the bloody thing off again and drilling 10 new fittings in

Mine's quite low as we have low slouchy sofas, and is perfect for TV, however i've noticed it could ideally be a bit higher when playing on the Wii standing up. Dilema!

One school of thought is to mentally split the screen into three, lengthways:

_________ <<<Top
I________I
I________I
I________I<<< Bottom

When you're in your seating position, the red line [or top of the bottom third] should be at eye level.

Personally, I have mine up higher and with your nutty kid, I would suggest you do the same so he can't swing from it

LOL @ the kids swinging off it, I luckily don't have that problem and unless a Child wants to learn how to fly I'd advise them they don't either

so quite a range then

my reasons were simply because it wold stop junior reaching the buttons and playing with them for it being that hight, but i've seen how high baby can put her hands and she's still got a few more months before she'll be able to reach the buttons where they were, but if i drop the telly another 6 inches then she's going to be able to stand on somethng and jab away with her podgy little fingers to her hearts content

decisions decisions

This is mine [ignore the mess, I took it when it was hot and had the air cooler on constantly ]:

Before the equipment was in but you can see the level of the sofa. The TV is WAY too high for optimum viewing but it's fine for TV and a bit of blu/ps3.... HD projector is on order

And a quick shot of the room before [from roughly the same angle as above] so you can see what I've been doing since last November Was a shame to get rid of the old carpet.

id have to drop it about a foot lower down if i follow paddy logic, and then i'd have to build fortifications around the base to stop the kids from doing silly childrens stuff on it

mind you, having purused ikea for some inspiration, i've come up with a few of these

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S59853441

but i need something that's 4 metres long (as the room is a bit longer but i need some sort of shelving at either end) and no slidiy draw fronts either as that's just asking for trouble

Have a go at something yourself or see what other solutions people have come up with which would probably suit you

One of them is me naked.

You've missed out.

I don't know how you can go to that fucking place, I HATE it. You know IKEA is swedish for "shit"??

Having said that, a few of the people on AVforums have bought IKEA units like in your link and chopped them up a bit, maybe bought 2 or whatever and fitted them to the way they want them.

The amount of cabling for TV's etc is unreal......I was tidying up my new install yesterday

For a TV, A skybox, and a DVD cum CD cum radio cum IPOD dock cum Home cinema Amp, two speakers and the arial wired up so there is a powerd output back round the rest of the house there are 19 individual cables including power leads.

It's barmy

ikea is great IF you know what you want and IF you can get in and out very VERY quickly

otherwise it's a drag to go there and spend 5 hours having to walk around the whole shop just to buy one of their hotdogs at the checkout queue's

ok then, mr master carpenter and norm abram wannabe, what would you suggest in regards to sticking soemthing under the telly then to hold all the bits and bobs that need to be housed under the telly?

and don't say "put them somewhere else" as it's then going to cost me hundreds in longer wires to hook it all together, and i've just figured out that i've got about Ł400 worth of wires hung up ready to connect back up again

4 hdmi cables
3 fibre optics for the sound
about Ł100 worth of speaker cable for 6 speakers
plus the amp cable
plus all the scarts that run too and fro
plus the ariel cables
and the computer stuff
it soon adds up when the ones they give you in the box are just too fucking short

I'd suggest investing in a more modern amp and getting rid of the spaghetti junction you've got going on!

If you're using Sky for viewing and not a normal co-ax aerial feed to a tuner in the TV, then there is absolutely no need for there to be any more than ONE HDMI lead into your screen. a decent amp will run your PC etc. and EVERYTHING.

HOWEVER, if you're running Sky+ [not HD] to get optimum quality of picture you can run a scart to the TV but I run our Sky+ through the Onkyo and it's fine.

As for a nice solution for your stuff, enclosed cupboards [with good ventilation and possibly a fan] are a good idea when there are kids around imo. Plus an all in one Harmony Remote or something with an RF sender so you can always keep the door shut [the PS3 will go through walls using bluetooth ]. PLUS it'll keep all your wires out the way! [not knowing what you currently have]

And you're right about IKEA, the one in Wembley is like a pushing and shoving competition in a Bangladeshi market

got skyHD paddy so i "should" be able to get away with just the hdmi lead yes?

but the dvd recorder has free view and the telly has free something else, hence the requirement for the areal to be connected

anyway, seen the pics and it looks nice the way it's been recessed into the chimney

Why are you using freeview if you have sky? And why on earth do you need a DVD recorder if you have Sky+ AND a PC hooked up?? Bin them, get a decent Amp/Processor and just have 1 HDMI lead going to the TV and then you can also bin the HDMI switch!

It's not a chimney mate, if you look at the last pic, there was nothing there before! Thanks for the kind words, a lot of work went into that before it was all plastered.
