Default Will there ever be a 300 mph road car

Seeing as 20 years ago you had the porsche 959 and Ferrari F40 could do 200 mph and now we have the Macaler and Buggati Veyron can crack 240 and 250 in 20 years time will the speed increase too 300 mph or would the cost be,so astronomical it not viable

Nah I reckon a tuned Veyron might reach about 280 but not 300,I meant in standard form not tuned

any untuned engine / transmission hitting 300mph would be mighty impressive - but completely pointless methinks

Can't remember the figures quoted but apparently getting to 200mph isn't "that" hard, but once you're over 200 the amount of extra bhp required for each mph is ridiculous. If you think how much Bugatti probably struggled to make 1000bhp reliable and driveable i think it will be a very long time until we see a 300 mph road car.

300mph? There is already plans for a road-going version of Thrust SSC. De-tuned slightly, should hit 600mph and be able to be driven to the shops.

Look at the number of each available, 250mph cars are still mega mega rare, a 300mph car wouldnt even sell in the same numbers as that, so unlikely to be commerically viable with current technology I suspect.

There'd be nowhere to put your bags once you've been shopping, and that's if you can even get over the speed bumps onto the car park in the first place

Yes very much so they are a limiting factor.

If your car does 300mph, it needs to be safe to sit at it for a sustained period with the tyres exploding, this is one of the problems they had with the veryon project.

And how many hours continuous use are they rated to once they hit that speed mate?

LOL

VERY different issue to a road car.

You'll not need more than that. At that speed, you can shop at Sainsbury's in the next village and still be there before the tyres explode.

Sump off, check clearances, filters, change oil after every run iirc, and that is IF it stays together for that one run.

Doubtful they'll use a drag racing engine as a platform to build a 300mph road car

They do alot more than just take the sump off a top fueler between runs !!! lol

I would imagine that 'customers vs no. of options' that theres actually more people willing to pay for a 300mph car at 2mill each than the current crop of 250mph cars at between 350k -1mill each. Purely for bragging rights the "Must haves" who are the ones who buy Limited Edition Veyrons for an extra half a mill despite being basically the same car, some even have 2 or 3 of the things !!

Tyres are the only real limiting factor as far as small volume manufacturers are concerned, the most amazing thing about the Veyron is that it effectively comes from the one of the largest motor companies in the world and hence cannot in any way be seen to fail through poor planning. You can buy reliable relatively long life (say 5k between rebuilds) 1500bhp engines for less than 40grand and on race fuel they'll make 2000bhp and see you waaaay past 300mph in something sleek like an Ascari or a Mosler. The first few prototypes might take off a bit, but thats when men are men and feel manly !!!

Found this on pistonheads..

for the Veyron the tyres have to be replaced every 2500 miles and cost Ł6325 each, so that is Ł25k a pop. Then at 7500 you have to replace all 4 wheels at Ł29 900. So if you did 7500 miles per year it would be a total of apporximately Ł100 000 on wheels and tyres alone.

100k on wheels and tyres ? methinks not, i'd rather cossie up my orion and waste the veyron

100k ploughed into an orion with cossie gear would kill it (the veyron)- or i'd kill the twat that built it for me

oh, you might want to proof read your post's too, your spelling is shit.

To "kill" the veryon, I would perceive that as being you could beat it at its party piece, which is doing over 250mph reliabley and safely.

I dont believe that a YB cossie engine in a ford orion would manage that for 100k

btw, with the correct gearing, i reckon the viper in THIS VIDEO would hit the 300mph barrier

200mph in less time than the veyron, that's henessey for you

i was reading a magazine today that talked about the bloodhound project. the engineering company based at the old TWR site in leafield builds v12 engines for sports car racing, and on of these 650hp engines is used in the bloodhound project - to drive the fuel pump

to go 1.5 times as fast as 200mph requires 1.5 ^3 = 3.375 times as much power.

or a 250 mph veyron with 1000 bhp would need 1728 bhp to go 300 mph - and a very long road. as chip says, durable tyres would be the limiting factor although ultimately any problem can be overcome with enough money. making a one off is easy, making one for sale by a company that wants to maintain a reputation for safety, reliability etc is something else.
