Default Anybody owned a Golf VR6 MK3-what to look for...

Im looking at a102,000 mile Mk3 VW Golf VR6 `97 with a friend tomorrow, what if anything is there to look out for on these cars, engine sound?, are they chain or belt timed, any common faults or bad areas to watch out for, bodies fair OK or they rust and rot?

Mrk 3s were pretty bad for rust fella so have a good poke about

think some of the vr6s had overheating problems aswell

Think there chain driven but not 100% sure

Sound lovely when under hard throttle but quite thirsty fookers, my ex workmate had one but didnt keep it long lol

Late mk3's were galvonised, check for corrosion on arches and boot lid.
Check rear wiper/washer
glovebox catch (they break often)

They are chain driven and will want replacing around 100k, costs about Ł4-500 with parts included, listen for a tapping sound coming from timing side of engine on tickover. i think it's the left side as you look in from memory.

you do have to work them hard but they are not bad once going, and the noise is immence. I've owned one myself and just the other day a friend of mine bought one in a rallye golf shell.

These can be had nice and cheap now so don't go mad and buy the first one you find.

More info can be found on www.edition38.com/forums

Regards,
Matt.

I have one atm its not a bad motor but im thinking of selling tbh its real thirsty for the power it produces.

The sound almost makes it worth it though! the handling is abit shit tbh its very heavy at the front but mines improved alot since fitting coilovers.

Highlines came with leather usually if not always heated.

this is my one

I had a Mk2 GTI with a VR6 engine conversion.

Its not that quick, but packs a punch thanks to the torque. Also bearing in mind the engine was in my light mk2 gti and the mk3 is a much heavier car

The amount of fuel it drinks to get there is not very good, Id say the VR6 was thirstier then my Escort cosworth!

On the up side, mk3 golf parts are readily available and cheapish.

Dont be fooled in to a highline being that special, all it is are a few bits of extra trim, not worth the extra premium at all!

As has been said cheak the chain, the runners/tensionars are what normally fail.

Also listen for a tappety noise, showing high mileage.
And also blue smoke on start up means the engines done a fair bit of work.

If you have a bit of cash spare and looking for a cheap toy the the VR6 is a great buy, but I gurantee you will probably sell it due to the amount it drinks!!!

The car on a whole offers a lot of fun for very little money tho

And what id do is when the mk3 body dies, shove it in a mk2, you wont be dissapointed!

BEST BIT BUY FAR IS THE NOISE, put a induction kit on listen to the engine roar!!!!!

It the later model that was galvanized, mk4 4 motion which isn't really a vr6........well not like the original vr6 which are all mk3's.
Totally agree about the highline, its not worth the extra. If you did want leather i wouldnt use highline leather either cos it s a bit crap. I'd try and find some colour concept recaro's for ease of fitment or just bang a set of cossie leathers in there and get the backs coverered.
Chains that rattle will normally require more than just a chain change, normally its tensioner and guides aswell. Seen as box has to come of to do it its well worth banging a cluth on them while your there.
Noisy water pumps are common, change that asap or you will likly end up doing.....

......Head gasket, normally start going around the front corner(o/s/f)

Plastic water housing on the side of the head often crack, again change it asap or head gaskets ahoy.

Awesome sounding car and personally i like the way they drive, its kinda smooth power delivery but they pull round the limiter easily.

I had one... last 6 weeks before I got bored.

Lovely engine sound.

Rust on doors and boot lid on Pre 96 cars is an issue. After that the cars came with galvanised doors and boots.

The engines are good for 250k miles.

They need to have the cam chain changed at 150k or sooner if the car is abused.

MPG is an issue if thrasehed.

i have one, had it for a few years now and i love it really, it's comfy and nice to drive, just cruise along in 5th all day with no troubles. mine does 30mpg relativrly easy on a trip and about 22mpg around town.

as said, water pumps (theres 2) plastic thermostat housing, mass air flow senser, coil pack, leads, plugs are all common. parts aren't cheap from vw.

Thanks for the links all,
After driving a Mk4GTI turbo and the 3 VR6 we are definately looking for 3dr Vr6, good body on it 12 month ticket and std NO crappy bodykits. Its a down grade from Seat turbo for a year till an R32 can be afforded so budget around Ł1400-Ł1600. Obviously a good one at Ł1800 could be considered

I have one as a cheap daily hack. TBH I dont find the fuel that bad but I couldn't tell you mpg. Ł20 a week does me and I work 10 miles from home, never been into mpg figures as you can either afford it or you can't imo.

One thing to check that hasn't been mentioned is the abs system. They quite often throw up faults and the warning light stays on which is an mot failure I think. Mine has been on the whole time I've owned it, 5 years odd. Its done 160k+ and pulls nicely. Interiors wear quite badly too, especially the drivers bolsters.

Mine wasnt wide track, I retained the Mk2 set up

Much better looking, and meant I could use the G60 brakes and much better choice of wheels

VR6 mk2 any day over an rst
