my job is a bit 50/50 for me, theres some very good points, when doing or leading intresting projects! but then on the flip side theres the boring mondain work! im an industrial sparkie, earning 27k plus shift allowance which is 16.6% for my current shift pattern of days and afternoons, monday to friday, then plus any overtime i want to do!

5/10

Hope you don't mind me asking - but what exactly is it you do offshore, and who do you work for?

My ambition is to work in the Oil&Gas industry, preferably in the North Sea region. Next year, ill hopefully have a Masters in Electronic & Electrical Engineering, and i'm just wondering what my long term career prospects could be in Oil&Gas exploration/production.

Cheers,
Agar

60K is still VERY impressive . Have you worked your way up over the years then? Or is it the sort of job you require a degree to get into in the first place?

Cheers for the info so far

Ive been offshore for 7 years started off as a motorman on about 20K and have worked my way up through 5 grades since then. No degree needed and to be honest most of the ones we do get out here straight from uni with degrees are useless.

Fair play to you, being able to work your way up. I know of a few people (welders at power stations) who have done similar things and are now earning over 80K on a good year.

I think, given my degree, I don't want to be working offshore - more onshore based stuff. Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

Great logic as usual.

I think jobs like yours are on a par(excuse the pun) with people who get paid for playing golf etc! A paid hobby

unfortunately theres hundreds of thousands of kids jut like you or soon to find out the hard way because they thought they knew best or no one was there to tell them to work hard.

At least your young enough to still learn and get qualifications.

My job's everything I want. The hours suit me, even though I am still here at 11pm.... and the salary aint bad either.

I remember my first junior secretarial role at 17 being £40 a week takehome.... I've progressed quite a lot since then.... lol

I started off in a processing team within Barclays. Keying information.

I fucking hated it and I got about £800 a month for it.

But I kept on, kept an eye out for the oppertunities as they came up and then took the next step up. Went

Data Entry (Hated with a passion)
Pension Admin (That was alright, but wrong area)
Took a break and went to College for a year.
Insurance company on telephone (worst job ever)
RBS Direct Business Banking telephone sales (loved the sales)
Portfolio Manager Commercial Banking (Loved managing the accounts and dealing with the customers)
Senior Business Advisor Business Banking (as above, really got involved with managing a portfolio of business accounts)

And 3rd of august I'm back as a Portfolio Manager with Commercial Banking on a Specialist SIPP team.

Its only really in the last three years have I managed to do well. I have on average increased my wages by about 3k a year so far.

And I love working for the Bank. I get up in the morning and look forward to going to work.

Very happy in my job.

After uni, I worked for 6.5 years designing offshore wellheads and tree's. I'm now a Chartered Engineer.

I was happy enough, but not 100%, as others were getting on further cause they were up the bosses a$$es!
After the major life changing experience of loosing my daughter last year, my mind got thinking that there was other places that I could put my skills to better use.

Since it was my first job, it was a hard decision to leave, but the best I've ever made.
I just recieved my first 6mths appraisal last month and got lots of golden stars, which was a bit of a shock.
Promotion is in the cards very soon already.

I'm normally office based, but currently offshore as a Subsea Supervisor, in charge of the installation of the subsea infrastructure on a worked over field.
