my e36 318is m42 engine has developed a lumpy/ rough idle, all is fine when driving along its just when u stop it hunts between 1000rpm & 1300rpm, ive checked for air leaks, checked the tps and all seems fine there, removed the icv and gave it a clean, plug leads are 3 months old and have just changed the plugs today, car was fine before i put £20 of fuel in it on fri morning then fri night i noticed the lumpy idle, thought i could of got some bad fuel so i topped up with another £15 of fuel from a different garage this morning and its still the same

any ideas?

check the breather pipe on the back of the cam cover this normally goes porous and leaks-also follow this pipe which goes back to the inlet manifold its a black plastic "top hat"type thing as we change these as a set!
OR check the induction pipe these can split-between airbox and airflow meter.

That's what happened to mine with what sounds like exactly the same symptoms. The rubber boot is kinda puckered up, so not immediately obvious if there's a split in it until you fiddle about.

cam cover breather is a slicone one and has no splits

other breathers seem fine, spayed carb cleaner around them and no change in idle

air flow meter induction pipe is fine, took it off and checked it and no cracks or holes

yeah mine was doing this when the induction pipe was split and they will most likely split underneath where you cannot see, so get your hand right in there and feel about for any splits, all my running probs were sorted by this, and the part is about 20-25 quid.

At least he still got home and can still drive the car, if it was a ford it would be layed up somewhere on a ramp with the bonnet up

If all else fails look on here http://www.bmwowner.com/forum/ you will definatly find the answer on there, as i used to use that forum when i owned my BMW and im certain theres 2/3 page threads on running issues.

Might be worth sticking it on a diagnostics machine aswell? save throwing new parts at it/wasting time
