Default Punto help?

girlfriends punto engine managment light has come on and the car wont run starts up but sounds like its running on 2 pots then dies, done a compression test cylinder 1 has 210psi cylinder 2 has 210 psi cylinder 3 has 110 psi and 4 has 90 psi so thats not looking good anybody had dealings with these? there is no water in the oil or vice versa also she has had the head gasket done in the past the car has 64000 miles on it.

i have a guy coming round tomorrow to plug his machine in to read the fault but im thinking its the head gasket...

not much point plugging the fault reader in, the compression check tell you everything you [don't] want to know.
Head off.

The ecu,s used to go down on them and cause them to run on 2 cylinders.I used to work on fiat for 6 years.Check to see if your spark plugs are firing cause if not ot will be the ecu.I take its a mk2 punto from an X reg up wards. If it is the Mk2 the ecu is bolted to the throttle body buy 2 alan key bolts.

+1 100% happened to my bro's, VERY common problem with them

EDIT: Having actually read your post, the compression test isn't looking too clever either!

if it was the ECU that wouldnt cause it to loose compression though would it so i cant see it being the ecu? surely the car wouldnt run on such bad compression on 2

Well you said in your first post you had 90 psi on cyl 4 not 2.Just stick a head gasket on it cause they are a piece of piss.Just make sure the radiator fan works.

Get an old spark plug and remove one of the spark plug leads and stick the plug in and earth it out on the engine.Crank the engine over and check for a spark. If all 4 plug leads are sparking it will be something else.

Im sure when the ecu goes down, im sure rather no1 n 4 dont spark and no2 n 3 dont spark. For what it takes to put a head gasket on it i would just do that. They are easy to do.

tried a compression test again tonight and pot 3-4 are now reading 180, so tested the spark ad only 2 plugs are fireing ( from the same coil pack ) so looks like it maybe better than first thought.. any idea how much they are?

Default fiat

Hi bud, i also use to work for fiat, id replace the ecu, the car will run like shit, at one point we went through a phase of changing coil packs and it was still the same, their is a company on ebay that do ecu for about Ł130 delivered, you will have to get the code of the top of the old one. the ecu self learn put it one let it get to running temp rev fairly hard three times (dont worry it shouldnt let go lol) by then the ecu will know what its doing, i did one of these about a month ago. hopefully glenn boy will bk me upon this.
Also the old ecu will be bin fodder, once the new ecu is fitted it can not be sent bk.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Default punto

Hi bud, the code reader will probably flag up coil pack, dont spend money on a coil pack as it wont fix the fault, id say when i was at fiat for the 20 puntos that got towed in 1 was a coil, its that common.

i took all the plugs out and layed them on the head to earth 2+3 sparked while 1+4 never so i took the power lead from 2+3 and plugged it to 1+4 and that the fired these plugs (not sure if i should do it but cant see it harming anything) so it seems that the ecu is only sending power to the lead that goes to the coil for plugs 2+3 if that makes sense??? would this be the ecu at fault?

Well im glad i could help mate.Like Steveo said the fault code will be no 1 or no 2 coil pack but it will be the ecu.Remove the air box 2x 10mm bolts and remove the spring clip off the front.Undo the little breather pipe which is coming from the cam cover then look at the throttle body. You will see the ecu at the back of the TB.Push the 2 pins in on the black ecu connectors and then undo the ecu allen hesd bolts.
