they are like being in a rocket propelled bus that does not like corners, with around 10mpg he will need deep pockets.

yes they are bad on fuel, common problems are electrics and cats (£1000 and dealer part only) to be fair i have not owned one but my mate did and i used it quite a bit for a 4x4 they handle well but no where near as good as most cars it just seems mad having all that poke then you have to slow right down for a bend, if it was me i would go for the diesel one, much better allrounder.

We had an '02 plate ML 270 CDi at work for 7 years. It stuck to the road but the body roll was something else!!! It also went through a couple auto gearboxes and had problems with the heating system which if I remember rightly, had something to do with the gearbox as well. I wasn't very impressed with the quality of the thing and someone told me they were made for Mercedes by Chrysler. Don't know if thats true or not.

Merc build quality had definitely gone downhill. A mate of mine had a Merc E300D he bought, same reg as my Mondeo (2000 W) and the rust on it was shocking. He reckoned they were made in France and that's why the build quality was so bad.
