200sx or saph cossie
#4
S14a 200SX, not a s13/s14, maybe be more specific.
A 5k saff cossie will win the poll as this a ford forum so the blinkers will be on, esp as only about 10% of people on here will have ANY experience of a modded S14a

Cars of each from the price range on auto trader...
1998 NISSAN 200SX Turbo Touring Coupe, S reg. 49000 miles, red, black leather, absolutely immaculate, tax Oct 05, MoT Oct 05, very low mileage, all electrics, all extras, goes like a rocket, 1st to see will buy, private, HP possible. . ono. . . . £4,750
Had 3 pages of these com up and this one was the most expensive of the 200sx
did a serch for a cossie within 40 miles and what did I get? Nothing so went national and found two
1989 FORD SIERRA SAPHIRE COSWORTH 2.0
TURBO, F reg. 96000 miles, Private plate, 10mths MoT, sensibly modified, Mercury Grey, good condition for year, recent engine rebuild.. £3,800 . ono.
TBH after reading good condition for year, recent engine rebuild I couldn't help but think a rotter with cheap re-build engine.... and ANY cossie going for under 5k has to be.
So sorry... unmolested 5 year old S14a 200SX for me, not only that the sx is 3 insurance bands cheaper.

It's a tough one. I like Saphs but the S14 will probably handle better, have less rust and look more modern. But then the saph is much cheaper to tune, and with a lot cheaper parts.
Personally, get a good example of either and they could both be just as good as eachother... so i'm not voting either way

For fun, i might go put this on a unbiast (ie non-ford) forum, i doubt a single one that time will come out with the Saff as the winner.
We talking 5k so we on about tidy RWD saff vs Tidy S14a.
Lers have a 100% standard comparison...
versus
Thats some good blinkers there
The
bit holds no water either if you know where to buy.
Barring 4doors and a Cosworth badge, there honestly no advantages i see, and ive been around modded versions of both nealry every day for years now.

200sx all day long. easily the far superior car in std trim. thats both looks spec and peformance (including handling, brakes, etc)
also, the SX has pretty much the same potential engine tuning wise. the parts aren't all that expensive either.
they don't suffer from rust and also have cheaper insurance.
only thing the saff has is that it holds its value better. so will be worth more in a few years time i'd think
i'd take a 3-door over a S14a 200sx all day long - can't see you landing one for 5k though

Handling is more down to anyone who understands how to make cars handle, not just judgeing the car by how heavy it is.

Remember the fact that with a Cosworth you will always be paying 'Cosworth' Money. For example. The front grille, which if you go to a breaker and ask for one for a Cosworth will cost you £££££'s and it is exactly the same as a boggo Sierra.
They can both be tuned to similar levels, but I reckon the 200sx can be tuned to a given BHP far cheaper than the Cossie.

Cossie for me
Don't care how good the 200sx is I wouldn't have one as I think they look bloody horrible No offence intended to those that own and love em. Like Subaru's I will always respect good ones and can appreciate them but I just don't like em'

ive driven a 270bhp s14 facelift model and it was quick it felt refined as new cars do.
i like my saph feels like your driving tho no electronic toys to assist you lots of rumbling and vibrating noises let you know your doing warp 9
then theres sites like this and the community spirit that goes with owning a cosworth the RSOC local meets, meeting beer monsters like GurnE and other tools off here lol.
if you want a daily driver get a 200sx
if you want a toy that can be an animal get a cossie
PS my saph maybe a barge but look in the pic in my sig
HARD AS FOOK

MadMac,
not all sub £5k saffs are nails you know!!
Mine will be available for around £4-£4.5k. Leather, 17's, T34 hybrid, stainless, Tax and MOT, NMS Stage 1 - probably around 300bhp, new rack, new brakes, reconned box, an engine that looked like it'd done 20k miles and is very strong, small turbo esc cos head, grp a style strut brace and all that jazz, leccy sunroof etc - not bad for less than £5k eh?

You know the weirdest thing about this thread??
On here, Passionford, a Ford Forum, there is a mixed bag of replies. Almost a 50/50 split of people between the 200sx and the Cossie.
How about putting the thread on the SXOC? I would bet that the amount of those guys that would chose a Cossie over a 200 you could count on one hand.

Think i'd be tempted by the 200.
Although both have good and bad bits.
Best take both for test drives and make your own mind up, rather than asking for someone elses opinion on what car you should buy with your money, your the only person who can answer your own question

P.S I REALLY did though
Look at Madmacs post, a set of wheels on that £4750 S14a and it will look really good.

On second thoughts, it IS like a shonky old saff. It rattles, it spins its wheels, it makes some worrying noises, and it breaks down alot, its VERY scary to drive. So it will give you the perfect introduction to cheap cossie ownership!
