On second thoughts, it IS like a shonky old saff. It rattles, it spins its wheels, it makes some worrying noises, and it breaks down alot, its VERY scary to drive. So it will give you the perfect introduction to cheap cossie ownership!

I don't honestly know how people can go for a saph over a s14a fair enough if we were talking more than 5k I would get the 3 dr only as its iconic to me NOT because its a better car, but pound for pound i fail to see how a saph would be better than the s14a you have reliability, looks and cheeper insurance, better fuel economy, you can park it anywhere and near enough 300 BHP all day long with just a filter, exhaust and boost upgrade. Only bad side i can possibly see is the depreciation of an s14a in like about a million years time as its not an RS and wont ever have the following that shonky 3 drs and the like have

i voted for the saph.
to be honest they are becoming rare and rarer each day as people are breaking them.
just look at how many are for sale compared to other cars i.e. subaru, etc
also please make sure you get a good one because they cost the earth to get right if there f**kd.
get it properly inspected.
as for the 200sx. it is a great car. i have seen some nice ones. but all i can say is for the money cossie is better. easier to upgrade powerwise to a limit.
i hope this helps.

i seriously think that the SR20DET engine is as good as a cossie lump for tuning. for a start, they seem to go tits up less. can handle big power on std crank, and they are far more reliable. don't get piston slap on an SR
i'll admit it, there are less big power ones about compared to cossies, but it doesn't mean they aren't just as capable.
also, engines can be had very cheaply.
as far as tuning prices, chips can be had for 150ish from Horsham Developments (he'll custom map for £30 an hour too i think) and most of the big name jap parts can be had very cheaply (off Ebay and various suppliers lik APEX Performance). eg. Greddy intercooler kits for £500, Walbro 550bhp fuel pumps for £45, 3" Apex exhaust for £300. cheap as chips in my boox.

also, put this same thread on SXOC and see what replys you get...
someone mentioned about the RS Ownes Clup being a good reason to choose the Saff. look around the SXOC, its a very good owners club, very helpful, cheap traders on the forums, lots of meets and events happening all the time, etc...

ok you have spoke about the cost of performance parts but lets talk about service parts.
just out of interest how much are general brake discs, pads, spark plugs, setup, etc
i just want to see how it compares up to the cossie.
please.

also the cost of insurance.
i have classic car insurance on the saph which is less than £750 fully comp, with rac and legel and agreed value.
how much would it be for a for the nissan?

try an insurance quote mate. i'd bet its about the same and on a normal policy, if not cheaper.
as for service items, they aren't all that bad. some things are expensive from Nissan, (think the rear 1/4 class on an S13 is £700 ish!) but things like headgaskets and cambelts are decent prices. there are alot of S13's and S14's being broken all the time (as loads of people can't handle them and stack them ) so body parts and most mechanicals are really cheap. there is none of the 'Cosworth' price fixing.
as for disks, pads and plugs its going to be the same prices as cossie if you go for things like Brembo disks, Ferodo Pads, NGK plugs, etc.
IMO, they are a better car for your cash.

thanks escy for the reply.
insurance wise it all depends on the person state i.e. do they have no claims or not. on a classic policy you dont really need no claims. so for example if a 25 year old male with non no claims bonus would want insurance on such a car they would find it hard finding a quote that would offer full comp, agreed value, rac and legel for less than £750.
the post above i did not actual mean it in putting the car down but i was comparing the cost of ownership.
did not mean to offend you mate.

i'm not offended at all mate. i've grown up loving cossies, never gave a toss about 200sx's. its just that know i own one and have been in a few, i do think they are better than saphs.
i'd say that cost of ownership is more for a saph.
i don't think there is a right and wrong to this question, as i'd be over the moon with a nice S14a or a nice Saph anyway. whatever is chosen will be the right answer. (untill the Cossie breaks and then you'll wish you had jap crap!!!!!)

great reply mate. very true.
i think reliability of a cossie is down to the owner. if you really look after them they are great. there are people who drive them all day.
depends on the abuse you give it.

Theres no comparison.
80's piece of shit or late 90's quality
Toe rag image or posher image
Rust in every orifice or no rust
Parts getting more difficult to source on good nick or good quality parts in plentifull supply.
I know which one I am choosing and I wonder which one I've looked at this weekend and will be this weekend too.
Mac- the black one up at 5100 on a S plate in the trader is better.

i drive my old girls s13 which is nice , comfy quite quick and generally a nice car BUT i love cossies , plain and simple .
i think if the post was titled . if you had 5k to spend on an car that you drive everyday to work , the nissan would be the sensible choice for me , but then again if i start working properly again i,l have an sx and a cossie

sun 5 k aint gonna get ya a ropey cossie, thats the money the fetch when decent , 3k is ropey cossie money
sorry but the s14a looks very goo but looks like a honda acord to me
oh and i dont think alot of people know about 200sx's either, as for em being comon , think ive only seen about 5 in my life , but then i dont think id notice em either
i would deffo vote cossie, unless ya was talking about getting a skyline, then id get a skyline ( with aftermarket seats, not the nissan micra ones )
but then i am biased as i did shoose the cossie, if ya was to askk me what i prefer to a turbo cabrio or a cossie i would say turbo cabrio
its all about opinion

steve sorry but the skyline has a shite trim, the guy i bought a set of wheels off has a white r32, fooking nice car, got a computer for the gearbox and the seats are fooking rank
i prefer the recaro shape seats, skyline seats are not nice at all
unless hes changed em, show me piccys of a r32 trim , his seats fromwhat i remember ( was a year ago, rememebr i didnt like em) they was porsche type shape but not leather

Well S14a 200SX leather interior is miles better than any Cossie interior, so nice for everyone to bring up the Interior argument
Dan- Course it can, but it doesnt make your average stg1 fast, hardly an argument to go out n buy a saff for 5k.
Anyhow, i dont give a fuck, this a silly thread with almost nobody having any experience of the one car, and at least half people never driven either
