Default Cavalier Turbos

What do people think/know about em?
Im seriously concidering getting one for many reasons....
I love the handling of my Cav sri more than the cossie
Cheaper on petrol (25 mile a day to work)
Cheaper insurance
Not such a securty/theft risk
Similar power to my standard cossie
Would alloy me to pay off a loan and have some cash in my pocket

Got my eye on this one:

Currently running Phase 2 which is about 250bhp, so should be similar performance wise to my totally standard saph (which would be more than good enough for me)
The exhaust would have to be changed to a twin square tho

if you can find one thats not been 'keved' then they are really good motors, good ones are still fetching good money though so beware of £2k examples!!

they sound lovely with a scorpion S/S on as well

Great cars, and at least heads and blocks are readily available.

Higher CR means better economy too, just not as tuneable as the YB without spending a bit of cash on stuff like installing oil squirters.

www.migweb.co.uk is the place you want to be asking for advice.

that one looks very similar to my mates, i almost thought it was , same alloys, just different exhaust and the 4x4 badge!

He's had a few Sri's etc and i got sick of seeing cavs, i really hated them but the cav turbo is completely different, it is a good car and pretty fast, think he's running 270bhp or summit now...

The only thing is the transfer boxes and the fact that it's FWD bases 4x4, which makes it a mission to repait anything, never mind all the weight over the front of the car.

I thought £3.5k was expensive for a cav, but when you think about paying that or more for a Sierra then it's not so bad

If you like your Sri, you should love the Turbo!

Transfer box (as already said) and heads (think the early ones were part of a recall?) and of course check history for stolen-recovered/damage etc...

Some of the migweb boys are a bit "anal" about cav turbos, make sure you remember to where an "anti rose tint specs" filter when reading what they say about them!

Yeh pop down to your local dixons and currys... Ram Raiders favourite.

High boot means it goes in a lot better

Take it youve given up on the idea of the vectra gsi now then, cav turbos are still a nice car.

think all the bad bits have been mentioned already
transfer box's, rear arches, and porous heads!

if thats on phase 2 do you know where and who it was done by?
hopefully its running EDS software

but on the whole the cars are pretty comfy and pukka

Cav gsi is a great car for the money, comfortable, reliable, economical and pretty quick.

Just watch for rot, especially around the rear end of it

my brother had one for ages, same colour as that one to, he adored it and kept it tucked away ini the garage for most of the time, was a good one too, low mileage and he kept it in tip top condition. He's sold it now, but he did get it up to about 350bhp iirc, haven't a clue what he did to it tho, but had a wicked intercooler that was well subtle behind the front valance wouldn't notice unless you were really looking. Only went out in it about once i think, but it did seem very solid and comfy

My bro's got a Cav turbo.

Jeezus - If you thought Cossies were unreliable....

Headgaskets,porous heads,slipped belts/bent valves etc etc etc...

It does go fairly though. Personally I'd have a GSI2000 instead.

ahh yeah, the GM heads go pourus so watch out, just look in the header tank for sludge. try get one with a coscast head, it doesn't have the plug under the dizzy on the right hand side.

transfer boxes will last if u treat them properly. rotate tyres from front to back every 1k miles for even wear on all. don't lower them more than 35mm and get adjustable camber bushes on the rear, there is a mod also though.

rear arches can go really bad so have a good look, but most cav turbos that are left are really immaculate.

i had one before the cossie.

Try to go for the earlier ones as the later ones can have a porous head.

THe EDS software is a bit crap...there is no boost limiter (like it claims to) and the std turbo will only be good for about 14psi. I had mine at 18psi and it didny last long....

Transfer boxes are a nightmare. U would be better buyin one with a knacked transfer box cheap and leavin it that way. I spent loads on gettin a transfer box replaced etc and it never worked right.

Rear arches are a bit shit and make sure they aint bubbled, else u need new ones.

They aint much better on petrol than a cossie, maybe about an extra 5mpg or so.

Realistically, u would b better off with a cav GSI with big wheels etc. 150BHP, less to go wrong and a bulletproof engine.
I had a cav gsi with 150k miles and it never went wrong at all. Infact, its still goin now...lookin good too.
